rjung: I knew two people in LA who were doing just that. (Actually, I think it was a common-law marriage, but similar circumstance.) Apparently they were saving a bundle on their taxes.
I totally support gay marriage. I asked the question because it’s a tough one which I believe requires a two-fold answer. But I wanted to see if I’m missing something in my reasoning.
If I were the lawyer arguing FOR gay marriage, and wanted to address this issue, I would have to be prepared, and I guess one of the issues I would raise is that it discriminates according to gender, and also I would raise the invalidation of the miscegenation laws, in which the Court said that the choice of partner is beyond the jurisdiction of the State. So, it’s not easy to answer.
