All my example split the opposite of the normal split. My point is that cancel culture seems to be white people whining about being held accountable. Poor Richards couldn’t get work because he’s racist trash, Satchel Page couldn’t pitch in the majors because he was black.
Technically, Maher’s contract for Politically Incorrect wasn’t renewed by ABC, and his show on HBO is similar but a different show.
Richards wasn’t cancelled from anything, Seinfeld was already off the air.
He probably had some stand-up gigs canceled, but I don’t have a cite for that.
I understand what you’re saying about the partisan split, but I think TriPolar was saying that some of both Democrats and Republicans (or liberals and conservatives, or whatever) were calling for Maher’s head after that, so it split the usual partisan lines. I don’t see why that matters, though – his show wasn’t renewed because he said things that offended people.
“Cancel culture,” like “political correctness,” is a term of partisan political propaganda, an ideological hit job, and not a coherent concept. Whenever you try to treat terms like this seriously, you’ll get bogged down in trivialities and confusion, because they’re fundamentally unserious terms.
I agree with you there! I just think it’s fun when someone mentions cancel culture against someone who calls his audience the n-word to remind that person that people have always been canceled for offending people (see the Smothers Brothers). If anything, it’s better now, because people are getting canceled for offending the little guy, rather than those in power (except see Kathy Griffin and the Dixie Chicks).
OP, if you want to have a thread closed so you can re-open it without the distraction of “cancel culture”, you can report the thread using the three-dots menu and ask that it be closed.
Exactly, it’s a dog whistle term. I’m glad it was included in the OP because it’s the more interesting topic.
Yeah, i wandered here not knowing who the guy is, and i was going to ask folks to take the whole “cancel culture” discussion to a new thread, not in IMHO. But since that’s most of this thread, I’m going to just close this thread and suggest that Asuka start a new one, and request that y’all go post your opinions about him (but not about the meaning of the term “cancel culture”) in the new thread.
