Nixon was also, in some regards, a legitimately effective president with some real accomplishments. He created EPA. He normalized relations with China, putting pressure on the Soviets, and he had a coherent foreign policy. Nixon was a terrible economic president, and awful in terms of his abuses of power. But he at least tried to be president. I’m struggling to find something that Trump can claim as a real achievement. His response to the pandemic will be remembered for anyone 18 and older for decades to come. ---

Biden should start a tradition of having opposing walls of portraits in the Oval Office or another prominent room in the White House. One side with the official portraits of the presidents he wishes to emulate, and on the other side a “rogues gallery” of presidents whose pitfalls he wishes to avoid. That would tell us a lot about the current occupant. ---
