How might I research any complaints or problems that have been reported against a day care in California (Santa Clara or San Mateo counties)? We are on a waiting list for our first choice center, and we are want to be super-vigilant in researching the second choice.

There are a number of ways to check up on daycares in California using [this](http://ccld.ca.gov/) website, but I’m not sure the registry of complaints is public – probably just problems that resulted in some state action being taken.

I might add that just calling the Child Care Inspector for your area (you can find it on that website) might yield useful information. I’m not sure about the legalities involved in divulging information, but in Oregon at least, the inspectors will tell which programs have a good rep for safety, etc.
