I guess I’d respond the same way I did to these comments. Background: My friend has an antique shop. I stopped in to say hi and one of her business partners – who I’ve met socially several times – was also in the store. My friend turns to her partner and says, “Dogzilla thinks she’s fat!”

Business Partner: Dogzilla, you’re not fat! You don’t need to diet!

Dogzilla: Hey, my pants don’t fit. I never said I think I’m fat. I said I couldn’t sit through a movie in my loose comfortable pants any more because they are no longer loose nor comfortable. I have two choices: I can drop 20 pounds until my pants fit, or I can buy bigger pants! I decided to drop 20. (Thinking: why don’t you chicks just mind your own business? Where do you get off telling me what I _need_ to do?)

Business Partner: Well, you don’t need to lose 20 pounds!

Dogzilla: (Thinking: And exactly what weight to I have to be at before it’s acceptable to _you_ that _I_ decide to go on a diet? Waitaminnit – I’m not justifying my choices to these women!) How 'bout this? You ladies do what you want to with your bodies and I won’t judge you for your choices and I’d appreciate the same respect from you.

Then I slammed the door, left and refused to talk to either one of 'em for a couple days. My friend has since apologized for ridiculing my diet choices in front of her friend. I’m still trying to figure out how fat I’m supposed to get before I _need_ to lose weight.

Since I probably wouldn’t know the cashier personally, I doubt I’d say as much. I have had cashiers make comments about what I purchase. Once, the cashier tried to guess what people were making with the ingredients they purchased. She guessed my lasagne right! (I thought that would be a fun game for cashiers. I do it with the other people waiting in line with me. Not that I tell them what my guess is…) Upon reflection, I’d probably just nod, give a blank, vacuous smile and mutter to myself on the way out of the store about what a rude jerk she is.

> Totally. Any of y’all ever worked as a cashier? Not real exciting. You look for excuses to start a conversation. If you ask if something is good, it’s because you’re genuinely curious about that product.

Yeah, I was a cashier for almost 4 years in a busy grocery store. I didn’t look for excuses to start conversations, because that would have been unprofessional. I was courteous, pleasant and speedy and the only time I commented on something that someone was buying is if they asked my opinion (which happened a couple of times).

However, the low-carb bread that I tried was really bad. Useless for toasting because it never really crisped, just sort of browned, and undesirable for sandwiches because of a persistent sawdust and cardboard taste and texture.
I ended up just buying white bread and adjusting things around it. I’m a diabetic, not a low-carb dieter - though the products have helped me a lot in managing my carbohydrate intake. I especially like the low-carb ice cream and milk.

I would have kept quiet because obviously being on a diet and having lost weight, has turned me into one of those jerks who thinks they have found “the answer”.

You know those people: the ones who judge every morsel of food you eat while they stare at your thunder thighs. Seriously, they’re almost as bad as Born Again’s! They have to “save” all the poor fatties.

Just move on and live and let live.

A little off topic, but. . .

This is how I respond when people feel the need to inform me that cigarettes are '“going to kill me.”

“My Gawd!!! Wow, I’m so glad you told me. Thanks SO much–you may have just saved my life!! They should put warnings on the packages.”

If I get a comment when I’m actually smoking, as opposed to buying smokes, I always immediatly put it out, just for effect.

I have to laugh- this reminds me of once when I bought those pre-done brownies that you just stick in the oven for 30 minutes. The cashier scanned them, did a double take, looked at them close and said (in her out loud voice) “Holy cow, WHO is this LAZY??” in complete amazement. She was so stunned by them that I swear, I don’t think she even realized she said it. I had to laugh, because they are the ultimate in lazy, and I’m betting the minute I left she thought “Oh man, I can’t believe it SAID that!”

Some people have no internal dialogue, I guess. As to the OP, I would have said “Well, you’re entitled to your opinion.” if I were in a good mood, and “Just ring it up and leave your opinion out of it.” if I were in a pissy mood. If I were pissy, I’d probably also say something to the manager about the staff making cracks about what I"m buying- that’s a huge pet peeve of mine. It’s just RUDE.

 Thats too long for a diet. If you haven’t reached normal weight by now, its probably not working.

…is one of the funnier things I’ve read on this board in a while. One of the precious few times I’ve actually laughed out loud on the computer.

The OP may, indeed, be at or near “normal weight”, but anyone who does it will tell you, Atkins is for life.

It depends on how much **panache45** had to lose in the first place.
I’ve been on Atkins for 12 months. I had over 100 pounds to lose. Just how quickly should I have lost it?
