I find your attitude incredibly disturbing.
You’re thinking of Vegas.
You are the Janitor at Auschwitz
You are not a Jew, You do not know these Jews, but still you see what is happening to them.
Are you not traumatised?
If not, why not?
It’s not understandable because you don’t understand it?
What about the people here claiming to understand it? Are they liars? Perhaps they are just ultra-macho cavemen pretending that witnessing child rape would be upsetting for them. Sounds like you’ve already made your mind up anyway.
meh, maybe he’s just been desensitized or something. I mean, a while ago I could get somewhat disturbed by some drunken men throwing nonlethal punches at each other and giving them nosebleeds and minor injuries.
But then a year or so ago I came across some videos of people falling down elevators shafts, trying to climb dangerous things, doing their jobs really dangerously and either getting killed or seriously injured because of it, then after watching these for a while, for some reason I went up a little and watched more graphic videos of people getting killed, then more graphic videos of fatal gore and things like ISIS beheadings/torture and general unpleasantry, fast forward to now and pretty much I don’t seem to be affected by anything (so far) (on the computer screen) and from time to time I occasionally visit death/gore/shock websites and things like that. Not really sure that that is a good thing, though. NOTE: I’m not trying to sound “cool” or brag or anything, though. Just because that is sometimes quite a common thing that goes around. I think I’m just telling the story as it went. I mean, I’d probably still be terrified if something like that happened in close proximity to me in real life.
Although, even on your graphic death websites, when the article is especially sad or tragic, such as if it’s the close-up death of a child(ren) then usually in the comments section you might find a few people mentioning how horrible the deaths/harm is, among the usual mass of jokes and puns that everyone loves making.
Yeah, I’m not really seeing the source of confusion here, OP.
It’s also not confusing how two different people viewing (presumably) two different sets of images (even if both sets are illegal) might display different visible levels of disgust or angry, which may or may not correspond to their own naturally different private feelings of same.
Yeah…I don’t even understand how this is a question. I’m hardly a macho type, but seeing something like that would certainly anger me, which I would think is a normal, healthy reaction to seeing something traumatic. To me, it is an issue of empathy. Even as a child, when I saw war documentaries that showed executions–I didn’t particularly care if it was the “good guys” or the “bad guys” doing the killing–it all made me angry.
Are you saying that my friend Caoimhe’s reaction isn’t ‘normal and healthy’ simply because it’s different from the norm?
Understand it’s not a personal attack but in my opinion, I avoid people who react like that. I’ve found in the past that certain beliefs and reactions are mutually exclusive to certain personalities/attitudes towards life. For example, a guy who is very nurturing, feminine and liberal and understanding towards others is unlikely to anger to the extent that 19yr old classmate of mine did.
very different thing. That is a real life and first hand experience. Seeing hundreds of people getting tortured in abject living conditions will undoubtedly have an affect.
On the other hand, seeing a child on the internet being abused, whom you don’t know, don’t have any connection to and let’s not forget knew that abuse was there on the dark web and that reporting it would be impossible (which the guy did funnily enough) is quite ridiculous.
It’s natural to get emotional. However, the extent of these emotions and the circumstances must be taken into account to distinguish between those that suggest irrational and rational behaviour. As I said, my friend Caoimhe got upset but she understand that anger is irrational in this situation.
I don’t buy into the idea that because anger is the norm to pedophilia/sex crimes against children that it is particularly the ‘right’ path. Certainly isn’t stopping the issue of pedophilia.
I made no judgments on your friend Caoimhe’s reaction, merely stated that, IMHO, a reaction of anger to trauma is normal and healthy. To put it clearly, depending on your level of empathy and how close you identify with harm coming to another person, there is a range of reactions that I would consider “normal and healthy.” That somebody would react with anger to what you described does not strike me as odd in the least.
Is it possible that the friend in question was molested as a child, or has friends or relatives who were molested, or simply has children? Any one of these factors might make a person react more strongly than someone who didn’t fit these categories (and more strongly than such a person might expect to react).
That could also play into it, too, of course. But, I mean, some people cry at movies, and not only is that not someone you personally know, it’s all completely make-believe. I don’t find crying at movies to be an abnormal or unhealthy reaction, either. I would expect seeing real trauma happening to another human being or animal or whatnot would provoke reactions of anger from a reasonable cross-section of humanity. Nothing odd about that. Now, there are are varying levels of anger, some which may be unhealthy, but nothing in the OP necessarily indicates that. Residual anger after two weeks? Still well within reasonable parameters to me.
In my view, the words “illegal” and “immoral” do not necessarily (nor even often) cover the same ground. I would ignore any legal definitions, and judge the person only on the moral issue, and presumably I know the party well enough to put the incident in the context of what I already think of his/her morality.
For example, I don’t see anything immoral about so-called “child porn” if it is obtained free of charge, since the acquisition does not involve any kind of a transaction that would encourage the production of the material. Not even counting the fact that a 17-year old porn star is over the age of consent of every jurisdiction on the planet except nine US states. Yet it is a felony for an American to view graphic video of her doing what she has a legal right to do. So if that’s what I discovered in my friend’s computer, what’s the big deal?
Uh, the big deal is that it involves abusing a child in order to make it. You have no problem with that? That someone is watching a child being molested? Seriously, you see nothing immoral about that?
:dubious:
Actually, you know what, here you go.
Child porn is non-consensual sex, by definition. Children can’t consent. They can’t consent to what they were forced/influenced to do, and they can’t consent to you watching them. If you or anyone is watching child porn, you’re violating the consent of a child. A real child out there, even if they’re now an adult.
If violating consent isn’t a big deal for you, then you should seriously reevaluate what kind of person you are, and what kind of person you think you should be.
That’s already been done. I was not an enabler, and if I paid nothing for the future rights to view it, I am likewise not enabling anyone with a profit motive. I also happen to own a very old ivory bracelet that was given to us as a gift by a family in Africa. It is now, 40 years later, illegal to own it. What harm am I doing by not destroying this treasured keepsake of an adventure of a lifetime? Yet, technically, a crime… The family had children, including nubile daughters, who as was the custom, didn’t bother covering the upper pars of their bodies. I saw their tits, and everybody else’s. How, exactly did I contribute to child sexual abuse, or the poaching of elephants? All the same day.
I can (theoretically) go to any country in the world and have legal consensual sex with any 17 year old girl. But if I have in my laptop a photo of her topless, I am a criminal. This is Orwellthink.
I was asked what I would think and I told you. And I told you why.
I think the bulk of this thread is about pre-pubescent child porn (it’s mentioned by several posters, and my response, at least, was assuming that, given what I was replying to.) I don’t want to get into the thorns of Traci Lords-type situations or high school kids sexting each other in this thread. Same perspective from you?
Mere possession of elephant ivory is not necessarily a crime. Cite:
