Northeast RI. Nothing right here. As the map shows it’s not making it this far east, but someone in the far southern part of the state about 15 miles from here told me the smoke was noticeable there. Nothing like NYC. It is supposed to be shifting west and away from here.
Useful tool for smoke forecasts. It may be a .ca site, but the forecast covers the entire continent. Forest fire smoke is a fairly frequent thing up here, though no issues at the moment. https://firesmoke.ca/
My city isn’t as bad as many other Canadian ones. You can’t smell smoke and things weren’t hazy. But the air quality reading sucks, and it is usually decent.
I do the same here in WA when we get blasted with smoke from the BC forest fires, or WA forests…works great! I have a new filter at the ready for this year.
I wish to hear more about this box fan and filter option. Does one put this conglomeration in a window to draw outside air, or does one plonk this in the center of a room to filter the air already inside?
I live in St. Mary’s County, MD, which is bounded by the Potomac River, the Chesapeake Bay and the Patuxent River - so the southern end of Merrylande. Yesterday was very hazy and when I went out, there was a subtle scent of smoke. Spousal unit said when crossing the bridge over the Patuxent to Calvert County, he couldn’t see from one end to the other clearly. We’re definitely feeling the effects, but not nearly as choking as farther north. Canada needs a good, long soaking rain.
They were saying on the news yesterday that here in the Metro Detroit area our air quality was the second worst in the world (I think we lost out to New Delhi, India). That’s some #2 news.
But checking Eyebrows_Of_Doom’s air quality site link, I’m only getting 170 this morning.
The latter. Most definitely, the latter. You want to minimize your exposure to the outdoor air during these horrid wildfire events to whatever degree possible.
This morning, Trenton is 240; yesterday evening Trenton was 346.
Today (240) it’s a very slight haze with a distant note of campfire.
Yesterday afternoon (346) it looked like we were on Mars, the air made throats scratchy and the fire smell smacked you in the face immediately upon stepping outdoors.
It seems like 240 ought to be more similar to 346 than that.
We’ve been a little hazy here in Chicagoland, but the sunsets have been beautiful. The White Sox game in New York yesterday was cancelled due to, and I quote, “apocalyptic air quality”. The picture of New York City taken from the air was appalling!
I spoke too soon last night. Turns out they issues an air quality alert right around when I was posting. That only means the the ppm was approaching hazardous levels but still not nice to have to breathe that stuff. Current maps show it clearing out of this area during the day.
This works amazingly well. You can come into your house and it smells like a forest fire inside, turn on the fan and within a short time it is cleared up. During the bad smoke season, filters fly out the doors of the hardware stores so get one soon.
