The great thing about the war of 1812 is everybody thinks they won. I love that.
The Canadian’s think they won, because they (with help from the First Nations) held back the American’s at, pretty much, the border we share today.
The Brit’s think they won, because they retaliated for the burning of York, by landing troops and coming east to burn down the White House. Mission successful!
The American’s think they won, because they successfully defeated the strong British forces at the all important Battle of New Orleans.
Everybody gets to celebrate, and ain’t we all great pals today!
But wait, not so fast. You know who really lost the war of 1812? The First Nations people, without whom those proud Canadian borders would certainly have never held. The, on the ground regiments and settlers who fought along side them, were helpless when they’re promises were betrayed by the British Crown, who viewed lying to the native savages expedient and without real consequence.
Maybe temper those celebrations just a tad.
