I need to chat with my aunt about this. She’s a member of Huckabee’s political team. Low ranking, but she’s there, and she’s been on TV introducing him before speeches. It would be interesting to see her slant on this matter.
As long as they’re topping or shanking. What worries me is the follow-through.
Or General Petraeus.
Which brings to mind another hoary aphorism: “Be careful what you wish for.”
To be precise, with Mr. Lott’s resignation, there are 23 seats previously controlled by Republicans up for election, and 12 seats for the Democrats. However, Trent’s slot will most likely be filled in the next few months, unless Haley Barbour can convince everybody that the election should be delayed until November. (Yesterday a circuit court judge ruled that he couldn’t do that, but the case will likely go to MS’ SC, and that has quite a few of his friends on there, so it remains to be seen what will happen.) Currently there are two Democrats facing a tough reelection in 2008 (Landrieu of LA and Johnson of SD) and no retirements, but five GOP retirees (three of whose seats are favored to switch or be a tossup), and five others who either currently have bad numbers or have potential popular opponents.
As for the House, I’d be stunned if it switched. There are 3 Democrats retiring (one who died), and 3 running for the Senate, all of whose districts are pretty safe. On the other hand, there are 17 Republicans retiring, 3 running for the Senate, 2 who ran/are running for President, and one who was elected Governor. Seven of their districts could be picked up quite plausibly. In addition, usually Republicans have a lot more money to throw at races than Democrats do, but two of the three Democratic committees (the overall and House organizations, I believe) have vastly out-fundraised their counterparts, and I don’t think the third is being beaten by that much.
So really, I don’t see the Senate swinging any way but left, and the same for the House.
No shit. Liberals keep hoping for a Huckabee nomination on the grounds that someone that conservative can’t get elected. I absolutely cannot be that optimistic. I think that, as a group, the voters are a bunch of fucking ignorant pieces of shit who are swayed by a candidate’s personality much more than by his/her actual views. And Huckabee is very, very charming, there is no doubt about it.
So who do you think he’ll ask to be his VP - Pat Robertson maybe?
I can’t find any mention of this in the mainstream news. You’d think this sort of thing would interest a lot of people.
A thought occurs to me: you know how some SDMB posters starting calling right-wingers “guck” a couple of years ago because G is one letter to the right of F? Look what happens if you move one more letter to the right.
It just happened last night in Warren, MI, and was reported this morning on MSNBC. Give it time to percolate.
Hrm…I wonder…
Sailboat
Now, now. Teddy wasn’t too bad.
Has anyone looked at Huck’s birth certificate to see if the name on it isn’t really Nehemiah Scudder?
Render unto Ceasar what is Ceasars.
Muh…muh…muh… my sharia!
Why do these religious whackjobs insist on running for office? And why do people even listen to them, much less vote for them?
Umm, on accounta peoples is mostly purty stoopid? I blame Sturgeon…
Aren’t they the largest contingent of Reagan’s grand Republican alliance these days? Why shouldn’t they vote for one of their own?
Because people will vote for them. Or, more basically, because they believe that their vision is one that the nation ought to adopt.
Because people believe in them. Or, more basically, because enough people believe in that vision.
You;re only the whackjob when you’re in the minority.
Well, hopefully it will be by someone with a wide stance.
Damn right. It’s about time we brought the one, true religion to the masses. Allah has no tolerance for those infidel Christians.
Bow down to Mecca, baby!
