I found this news story on the net , talk about being beyond self parody I shudder to hear the song. ATLANTA (AP) - Madonna will perform during the Super Bowl pre-game show, and Phil Collins will headline halftime entertainment that includes Christina Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias and Toni Braxton. Madonna, who has sold more than 100 million recordings, will give the debut performance of her new single, a rendition of Don MacLean’s American Pie. The pre-game show is a salute to Great American Music of the 20th Century. The Smothers Brothers are hosts of the pre-game show, which features performances by Tina Turner and Travis Tritt. The halftime show, titled Tapestry of Nations, will be produced by The Walt Disney Co. for the sixth time. It will feature an 80-member orchestra, puppets and a choir. All right, who’s in charge of the Super Bowl halftime show? Just when you think it can’t be worse than last years crapfest, they keep finding something worse. I propose that they abolish the halftime show and just loop the videotape of some guy taking a dump. ---

Perhaps “puppets” isn’t the best choice of words. The halftime “Tapestry of Nations” show is going to be a scaled-down, Super Bowl version of the parade that will be taking place at the World Showcase (at Epcot at Walt Disney World) throughout the year 2000. Don’t let the term “puppets” fool you. What you’ll see are giant (20’ high) human-esque forms carried by people. It’s difficult to describe in words, and if I still had my Winter 1999 issue of the Disney Magazine I’d scan the picture and show you all some examples. Suffice to say that they aren’t “puppets” in the “Sesame Street” sense. * * * I have a homepage, with pictures! Madonna does _American Pie._ I feel so, so _violated._ I’ve got nothing against remakes, I really don’t. But she’d better do one helluva job. I’m sure people all over the country are having reactions like John Corrado’s (I had trouble reading his post–the brain fusion got me, too). ---

Maybe they can get Akineyle to perform “Put it in Your Mouth.” An amusing, if foul, song, that I think most viewers would enjoy. The theme of the song is oral sex. Nothing more. I laugh whenever I hear it. ---

I dunno, there’s a certain hideous, inevitable symetery to the whole thing: wretched excess meets crass materialiasm. Madonna crooning, “the day the music died”; it’s sublime in a twisted way. Maybe the puppets could gyrate to “Papa Don’t Preach”. The only problem is that the whole thing is so over-the-top awful it’s hard to nudge it even that slightest bit more into parody. Though, I rush to say, I have utmost faith that the folks on this board will find a way if anyone can… Veb
