Well, provided real actual children aren’t involved, it’s probably something that should be studied further. Mind you, I’m still not totally convinced, if only because I think working for a cure for pedophilia or a way to curb the urges might be a better endeavor.

Cartoon child pornography is banned in the US for largely the same reason one would want to ban child sex dolls. Hell, freakin kinder eggs are banned from the US because the toys within them are presumed to be choking hazards for young children even though one could easily argue against this rationale by pointing out that plenty of toys marketed to children that are sold in the US are just as dangerous.

Wow. A couple posts ago you were accusing me of strawmen whataboutism, and here you are, not only immediately going to it yourself. The fact that you’re wrong about cartoons was mentioned below, I’m not even sure what the hell you’'re talking about with the Kinder reference, given that I don’t believe I’ve stated my support for that law, nor have I said that all laws are good. Furthermore, given that there have been cases of children choking on Kinder toys, it seems the consistent position for you would be to remain in support of it.

This notion that freedom should always be the default no matter what should only apply to people’s basic rights and to public access to information; anything more sounds like libertarian nonsense to me.

I’d say that what someone does in the privacy of their own bedroom when all parties are able to, and do, consent, is a pretty basic fucking right.

In the 80s, I remember Falwell and the Moral Majority getting Playboy removed from 7-11 on the idea that even Playboy’s level of pornography was causing irreparable damaged to children. It’s been over 30 years since then, and somehow they still haven’t really managed convincing evidence. In the 90s, I saw my first inflatable sheep (possible they’ve been around longer), yet after over 20 years, I haven’t heard of any huge upswing in bestiality (though I grant I haven’t done a lot of research into that, by all means provide a cite if it actually has). So why should I think there’s going to be an uptick of pedophilia if we don’t prevent rich perverts from buying child-size realdolls?

Isn’t the majority of paedophilia (or child molestation) done to family members? I’d assume in that case, it’s not likely a doll would fulfil the abuser’s requirements.

Though I suppose if it works for a few paedophile so, it’s a good thing.

I don’t think it is because they are family members that they are targeted, but rather, because they are family members, they are easier to target.

Sometimes abuse begins in the family (or other power relationship), but then takes the form of pimping the target out to a wider audience.

Having been the target of a grandfather who abused sexually all of his descendants to varying degrees of success, I’d be perfectly happy with these dolls if they did indeed keep children from being assaulted. But having met guys who expected sex to be like porn, I’m not too sure that’s how it would work. The problem is, how do you study something like this? You’d need to begin with known pedophiles, which means either people who have been caught or people who accept being part of anonymized studies through their mental healthcare; in turn, the second group means people who actually accept that their desires aren’t right.
