I used to work with a woman who had 5 kids (not at the same time though) and breastfed all 5 kids (not at the same time though). At one point, she was watching her sister’s kid, who happened to be within a few months of her own kid (they both were babies–the kids that is), and she breast fed her nephew. I thought that was kinda icky. Breastfeeding a puppy…that is just too closely connected to beastality for me… **shudders** ---

Okay, the weird thing is that part of me is going “Ewwwww, gross!” But then I remember the news stories like: “Cat raises baby raccoon” or “Dog nurses baby tiger” where the response is usually “Awwwww, cute!” I just… don’t know what to say. ---

The rational side of me wants to say that even without this -um- extra level of bonding the puppy will still most likely grow up to protect the kid. The smartass side of me is just happy that the only problem we had with our dog was trying to hump someone’s _leg._ ---

:smack: I’d just hate to be the woman’s husband, daughter, or any other family member; I find this quote interesting, very interesting, “I didn’t want to waste it so I gave it to Honey Boy,” she said; how about bottling it up for your 2-month-old daughter. I can just hear her reminiscing to her future grandchildren, “I breast fed your mother until she was 2-months old, and then decided, hey, the dog needs milk too, and probably more than she, so I let him dine on my mammories, since your mother preferred her milk bottled; then, I found as an added bonus, it tickled when he fed on me.” I think it’s just a good excuse for her to do what she really wants. Well, not really a good excuse, but a lame attempt at one. I’m sure that her daughter will look back with pride on her upbringing, and be thankful that her mother held her with such high regard. After all, how many of us are so blessed, that our mothers, in their infinite wisdom, would put the dog’s needs/wants/desires above that of our own. Bravo! 😃 ---

I read the whole article simply to find out if she was doing it directly or by a bottle. I was hoping so much it was by a bottle. Needless to say, I was disappointed. ---

The article did say that the baby had stopped taking the milk, presumably by her own choice. And clearly, the baby isn’t starving, she’s just on bottled milk. And the breast-feed-in-public crowd have been telling us for ages that there’s nothing sexual about breast feeding, so I don’t think the folks should be getting squicked out on that account. And let’s face it, we have no problems with cross-species milk consumption when it’s humans doing the drinking (although I admit, it’s rarely directly from the tap). I would worry a bit about the behavioural implications on the dog later on in life. ---

Are you kidding? You really either a)think directly breast-feeding a puppy is OK or b) that breast-feed-in-public crowd would think it’s OK? I’ll tell you one thing, while I may drink cow’s milk, I don’t put my mouth directly to her teat and slurp away. I buy it in a bottle, and it would be much less disturbing if she used a breast pump. ---
