There used to be a place in San Francisco called “Steaming Potjie” (Google sez a ‘Potjie’ is an African stew pot BTW). It became a running joke for my friends to mutter stuff like “Wow, must be really spicy to give you a steaming potjie” or “Mmmm! Not just potjie, _ **steaming** _ potjie!”.

Well, we thought it was pretty funny anyway…

> When I moved to Camp Pendelton, I passed an eatery on the road called “Der Weinerschnitzel”.

They finally realized that it would have been **Das** Wienerschnitzel and dropped the “Der”. Even after all these years, a lot of people still use the “Der”.

These are not ethnic restaurants, but I liked the names **Gooey Louie’s** (now closed) and **Meaty Meat Burger** (Black owned). Meaty Meat Burger burned down several years ago and was rebuilt. Now it’s called **Mo Betta Meaty Meat Burger**.

**LoadedDog** , you missed “Thai Me Up” which used to be on Oxford street as well as “Thai Riffic” and “Thai the Knot”. And “Thai Coon” has closed now (it was next door ro Thai Foon), and there really did use to be one called “Thai Me Kangaroo Down”.

Do you live in Newtown? I used to. There were 24 Thai restaurants between the uni and the station; I counted once. I highly recommend Sumalee and Thai Jaroen.

The town I live in has “Murder Burger” (now “Redrum Burger” with the slogan “Same great taste, shiny new name”) and Thai 2k. I passed a place in the bay area once called “Chinese Foo”. Maybe they didn’t have enough money for the “d”?

Mmm… Mo Betta Meaty Meat Burger… they do make a hell of a burger…

Back when I lived in the San Gabriel Valley, there was a Vietnamese restaurant nearby named “My Dung”. I guess it’s still there; I just found [this picture](http://www.roadtripamerica.com/signs/mydung.htm) of the sign.

**Anamorphic** : Mo Betta Meaty Meat Burger is out of the way for me. When I do pass it, I’m usually not hungry. I’d like to try it though. I used to work for a company whose receptionist was the mother of the owner. (Very, very nice lady.)

In Campbell, CA, there’s a place advertising “All You Can Eat Ethiopian Cuisine” Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Ethiopia in a more or less continuous state of famine?

And just out of curiosity, where is Mo Betta Meaty Meat Burger? Somewhere in L.A., I’m guessing, but that narrows things down only slightly more than “Somewhere”

I’ve seen at least two separate restaurants named “Phucket Thai”.

There’s a Bobby Chao’s restaurant here but the apostrophe is so well hidden that every time I pass by it I read “Bobby Chaos”. It’s like a wrestler opened up a Chinese restaraunt.

**Thai Me Kangaroo Down** was at Coolum a couple of years ago. **Sumalee** is terrific. Every time I see someone at the Enmore theatre I go early and have dinner there. The trick is to not bother with rice the meals are so big. The whole deep fried barramundi is fantastic. Canberra has the non ethnic **All Bar Nun** restaurant.

Years ago I read a report in the Canberra Times about a court case in Adelaide. A couple had called their cafe **Get Stuffed** and the council objected saying it was offensive. The owners tried to make out that it was a clever play on words - go to the cafe and leave stuffed kind of thing. The judge didn’t believe this as he had never heard anyone say “let’s go the cafe and get stuffed.” He stated that he thought they were really hinting at “Get F\*\*\*ed” and if that was their intention he would order the council to allow that name on the grounds of free speech. The owners didn’t accept this kind offer and chose some innocuous name.

Yair, I thought I’d missed a couple. Thai Riffic was the one I was trying to think of. I remember at the height of all this an SMH journo quipped “I wouldn’t be surprised if Thai Mekangaroodownsport makes an appearance soon”. Didn’t realise some silly bugger actually did it. 🙂

I used to live in Enmore, around 1990.

I hesitate to post this, but the restaurant’s name has become rather notorious around Vancouver: Pho Bich Nga (I think that’s how it’s spelled at least, I can’t find it in the phone book).
