Yes. And it’ll cause some people to not take precautions or evacuate next time. They’ll think that the “worst storm since the 19th century” wasn’t so bad, why not just stick it out? Not to mention that I think it’s horrible to terrify people.
It’s been mostly rain, and a lot of it, in NYC. The eye is still a few miles to the south of us, and heading straight for us; due in a couple hours. So far, the worst that’s happened is an inch of water in the basement and a couple dribbles through the roof (that I had fixed last year). Hope that’s the worst we wind up with.
Its been raining in DC since yesterday morning. We have some strong gusts of wind but the rain was never battering the house like we’ve experienced in other storms. I did hear the branches from the peach tree scraping against the back wall, but that was it. I checked this morning, and no trees fell in the back yard. The ground is pretty wet, and there are leaves everywhere, but other than that, there is no indication that anything happened. We still have water, power, cable and internet.
Well that was underwhelming.
Yeah, my immediate neighborhood got lucky. Lots of rain and wind, but everything has stayed on. About 500,000 others aren’t so fortunate, though. Lots of outages.
I did wake up just now with a lot of fire trucks parked outside, but no alarm went off and they never told anyone to leave, so I guess it will remain a mystery. They’re gone now anyway.
Port Penn, DE checking in, right where Delaware River meets C and D Canal (evac area).
Tree down in back yard. Pool overflowing (inground pool, so non-issue really).
Trickles of water in utility room of finished basement that never sees water.
Boat safe on trailer. I put the winter cover on before storm got rolling.
Old lighthouse behind me still standing. Looks ok.
GFCI outlets lost power. Took 30 minutes to track down water intrusion into outlet.
Gotta hit road and check other properties, one is on the ocean and the other is on the Chesapeake. If I am facing just a downed tree, I will be dancing.
We have power for now, but 1/3 of people in area are without power. Told to prepare for 2-3 days to have it restored.
Yeah. I’ve been through thunderstorms worse than that. Dang, I was hoping to get out of some stuff on Monday. We never even lost power.
Anyway, here’s the tree that almost fell on my car. (My car is the blue one.) As far as I can tell there is no damage, though that’s a one-way street so I’m not sure how I’m going to get out until they remove the tree.
About half a million homes in Connecticut have lost power, and as far as I can tell, the eye of the storm hasn’t yet gotten there. My brother’s house is without power.
My sister in W Hartford is out and we’re without cable/Internet.
Based on the storm trackers I’m finding on the web, the hurricane force winds haven’t yet reached Connecticut. So the worst is yet to come.
A big meh on NYC’s upper west side. That rainstorm a couple weeks ago looked more serious.
Yeah. We’re stuck in a hotel in NJ because our flight back to California was cancelled. I remember going through Hurricane Fran in North Carolina years ago. I was up all night listening to howling winds and falling trees. This was pretty mild by comparison.
The horror, the horror! Hope you’re back and plugged into the matrix again real soon.
north carolina knocked the eye wall out of irene. she had the potential to regroup as her pressure was around a cat. 3. she wasn’t able to reorganize her eye and that is what led to things not being as bad in the mid atlantic and on up. basically she spent to much time in nc, pounding the coast for hours.
flooding is getting worse in the phila area as the rivers continue to rise.
I don’t suppose that anyone wants to know that tropical storm Jose just formed in the Atlantic? So we could go through this again in a few days.
I’m in the evacuation zone near Brighton Beach. Just a lot of tree leaves to clean up now.
The cool breeze after a day of humidity is a nice welcome.
Power just went down on our street in York Maine about a minute ago, within 20 seconds of the outage, our backup generator had kicked in and we are now running on the generator
Just lost our huge willow. The tree fell away from the cars, thank goodness.
Reporting in from West Trenton (Mercer County NJ): lots of water, my basement has a few inches and Mr. Sump Pump is working hard. A few trees down (not mine), next block over the power is out, but I’m still chugging along.
Most highways and larger urban streets are closed due to flooding. The Delaware is prompting evacs in lower-lying areas and may surge up to 30’ flood level by tomorrow (dunno if that means it rises 30 feet from its regular depth, or if it’s total depth.).
Olives and other East Coasters: so glad to hear everyone is okay.
I’ve got about 1 1/2" of water in my ground floor apartment. I think most came in through the foundation, there must be a crack somewhere. The rest came in via the laundry room adjacent to my kitchen.
Some drain/sewage back up in the tub that had to be scrubbed clean.
Every towel I own has been used, washed and is now in the dryer. Another load is washing now. A pile of clothes dumped outside in the yard to be dealt with later. 3 large garbage bags and a trash barrel full of ruined crap. The living room rug is sopping wet for about 6’ from the edge. I pulled my pile of DVDs off the floor in time, so I don’t think any cases are ruined. All my electronics are safe. A couple of broken laptops that I was going to throw out anyway were the only casualties there.
My bedroom has a 1" step up, so it’s bone dry.
I’ve done what I can for now. I’ve got the windows and the screen door open to try and lower the humidity and temp in here. I squeegeed a lot of water out the door One of my friends is going to bring over his wet-vac as soon as he’s done dealing with the 4" of water in his basement and another friend is bringing over a large floor fan to help circulate the air in here.
It’s hard to do much more for now. Also I’m a fat asthmatic who’s coming down with bronchitis, so exerting myself causes me to start gasping for air.
No tree branches or other damage to my car, some trim ripped off the house, but that’s the landlord’s problem. No trees down in the yard or out front, but a lot of broken branches, some of them around 4" dia.
All the flooding was due to poor drainage on my street. I live near the highest point on Staten Island, which is the highest point on the eastern seaboard south of Maine.
