While not completely over, what I’m seeing from Miami and the southern environs says they’re getting light-to-medium tropical-storm-type weather. Doesn’t look like it’s too bad down there. That allows me to focus _ **all** _ of my worry on the Space Coast. I can’t _not_ spend my whole day on Weather Underground, obsessively refreshing the blog comments and watching the updates every hour. I doubt it’s helping my state of mind much, but I just can’t help myself. ---

Evening check-in here. Happily, this has been a non-event for me so far. Just a few rain bands, without any noticeably strong winds. It looks like Broward is going to miss the worst case parts - Matthew was good to us and did not wobble to the west. We’re likely to get some more rain and wind this evening, so it’s still not a great time to do crazy stuff. Now, we wait to see if Matthew really loops around and hits us again next week. ---

Broward county still here. Winds have picked up maybe gusting up to 35 mph, but generally under 20. And what irritates me is they knew Broward wasn’t going to get anything as early as this morning. Yet the media kept crying wolf. We were told to stay off the roads because by noon the conditions would be bad. Yet I got my mail at about 5:00 P.M. The Post Office sent people out in those unstable vehicles thinking conditions were going to be bad? Don’t think so. All I ask of the media and the government is to tell the truth when they know it and stop trying to keep people in a state of fear. Because when something bad really does come, and people don’t believe them, it will be their fault. I not saying hurricanes are not dangerous, but give the all clear when you know it. Don’t keep hyping the story for ratings. ---

First rain bands moving into Georgia. Expecting the beginning here by morning. Got a couple more things to put away outside, and then finish laundry and dishes. And then collapse. And my brother and his lovely fiancé are still planning on a Saturday evening wedding. This should be awesome. ---

I’ve never been through a hurricane, but living in Kansas I’ve surely lived through tornado warnings. **Believe** the forecasters and weather people! You may have been through storms and warnings that didn’t pan out, and over time I can see how folks would get jaded. In 1966, before the better radar systems we have now, there was a monster tornado that went right through Topeka, Kansas, where I live. The weather anchor, Bill Kurtis\*\*\*\*\*, knew he had to say something to shake people up and get them moving into shelter. Should he yell, cuss, what? His impassioned “For God’s sake, take cover!!!” is credited with saving lives. \*\*\*\*\* Yes, the _famous_ Bill Kurtis, news anchor and television journalist. On June 8th he was a law student at Washburn University, and working part time at the only TV station, WIBW. His calm, on air demeanor brought him to the attention of the network, and his career took a different turn than he had planned on. ---

Based on the images from [weather.com](http://weather.com) tracking and forecast projections, I’m calling this storm, “Spermicane Matthew”. Because the tracking picture looks like a sperm. And yes…beer supply still good. ---
