Hurricane Sandy: Potential Catastrophic NorEaster Brewing in the Carribean [edited title]

Dark and cold this morning. Posting from my phone. In-laws have power, heading over soon. Can’t use battery up to read the thread, hope everyone is ok.

That’s good news.

Similar situation in Connecticut with Gov. Malloy blasting communities there for not following evacuation orders.

In 2001, Tropical Storm Allison caused major flooding throughout Houston, notably in the Texas Medical Center. It is known that the TMC floods; some hospitals were better prepared than others. When power went out, the emergency generators came on. Power was not out for long. But a couple of major hospitals had their electrical switching systems (don’t know the technical term) in the basements; since the basements flooded, they sent most of their patients elsewhere & limped along with emergency generators (in large trucks) for weeks. Other institutions had flood gates to protect their basements & all electric stuff where it would not get wet.

One hospital had the emergency generator in the basement; when the power went out, the whole place went dark. Nurses carried patients down many flights of stairs, lit only with flashlights. The hospital was out of business for months.

NYU will probably build a generator in a new location now. Apparently they had no reason to expect flooding…

Wow. Good find. Thanks.

Breezy Point is decimated.

I wonder how The Nautical Mile in Freeport fared. No fire as far as I know but all those restaurant and bars sitting directly on the canal. . …

I’m in DC, and I’m sure as hell more people didn’t follow your example.

Yes, it was not floods and fires. But traffic accidents and down trees and power lines were a significant risk (especially in DC, where many of us rely on metro and are occasional drivers.). I am glad the authorities encouraged us to hunker down and stay safely at home for the duration of the storm, and that our employers and schools enabled us to do so. If more of us had been commuting, carousing, and wandering around rubbernecking, there would have been significantly more injuries and fatalities. Our first responders and those who had a legit reason to be one the roads would have been in more danger, and it would have hampered our ability to respond to situations that truly were not preventable.

*95% of Roseland is without power you can expect power to be out for many days. *

I am incredibly luck that I have power including internet access.

Killer Trees!

Just had a quick look 'round at my place. There’s one small branch down, a garbage can knocked over, and a shitload of leaves, but that’s it. Even the spider on my back porch is still there and has rebuilt his web.

I didn’t look very far. There may be downed trees in the neighborhood, somewhere, but we seemed to have escaped unscathed.

On a personal note, my son who posts here very occasionally as-- um-- I forgot his username, can’t get home. He was supposed to come back Sunday morning from Miami and made it as far as Charlotte. Today he’s in Pittsburgh. He had hoped he could get a Greyhound in but not even buses are coming into NY.

I need to take a walk and hit the ATM, I have to get money into an account to cover some upcoming automatic payments and I’m sure that money will be debited as scheduled, storm or not. It also gives me an excuse to scope the neighborhood, I’ll let you know if I see anything interesting.

Did not hear about the blown transformers in Astoria but I’m not suprised, I never lost power but it got really glitchy…to the point that I cut of the computer and TV because I was getting tired of restting the cable box and internet connection every five minutes

Yeah, last I saw the tunnels and bridges were all closed.

My aunt, uncle, and cousin have all been in Israel for the past couple of weeks for my cousin’s wedding to a nice Israeli boy, and they were supposed to fly back yesterday afternoon via NY (to Florida, where they all live). Needless to say, they are going to have to spend a couple of extra days in Israel, because they haven’t been able to get another flight. Whodathunk that a New York airport would be more dangerous these days than just over the Israeli border from Lebanon?
I just hope it doesn’t screw up my cousin’s honeymoon plans – I think they were supposed to leave on their honeymoon as soon as they got back from Israel, and the honeymoon is another long schlep – Costa Rica. (I thought the way they planned it was crazy, but hey, not my wedding!)

I think the Lincoln Tunnel is the only one that’s open. But yes, there are not a lot of people getting in or out right now.

Most of the area still without power. I am extremely grateful that my street, yards from the shore and with old trees tanged around power lines, got the power back this morning.

Still no cell signal or 3G. Last night I kept wondering how we’d call an ambulance if we needed one. No way to call…

My hubby had to check in at work in middle of the Island and they were out of power (but had cell service, go figure). But here on the shoreline, we’re ok.

I met Claudene Christian when she was crew on the Bounty, when it docked in Belfast, ME, earlier this year. She mentioned her descent from Fletcher Christian; I didn’t see any reason to doubt her.

I’m sorry she lost her life. I never met anyone who met this kind of fate before: “Lost At Sea.” How very bleak. :frowning:

It’s been pointed out before during flooding that actually putting generators in the basement in flood-prone areas is the worst location… but many buildings were so designed and reconfiguring them is not easy or even practical in many situations.

Hopefully, going forward, critical buildings will have generators on the upper floors/roof (where I’m sure they’re vulnerable in a different manner, but you can’t always cover all contingencies).

So can someone explain to me the Empire State Building being the only one with power in that famed photo of the NYC skyline?

They found her body.
