Hurricane Sandy: Potential Catastrophic NorEaster Brewing in the Carribean [edited title]

A warm meal, a hot bath and a short commute are all good for the soul. Glad you’re taking care of yourself.

olives: Yeah, most of the fridge contents will be ruined after 2-4 hours without power. Freezer after 24 hours without opening it. If freezer items still have ice crystals, they can be refrozen. Fridge items that should be OK: margarine, butter, hard cheeses, mustards, most raw and whole veggies/fruits.

Oooh, a jet ski! Drag it home!

After the derecho, we were able to keep all our fridge contents with the exception of one pack of lunch meat by putting in a couple bags of ice. 'Course, we also needed a bunch of towels on the floor to sop up the runoff.

My son still has not made it home. Greyhound was not coming to Long Island, their website is a pack of lies! He did hook up with an internet friend and has a place to stay until tomorrow.

No power except for my small generator but we came through the hurricane OK. We ran up to Woodbridge Mall today for lunch and lighting.

We have some trees done but nothing vital was hit. The kids trampoline took a bad beating but that is fairly minor. I already repairs the damage to the Wood Stove pipe and where the water got in around the chimney.

Turned out that when the roofers repaired the roof after the tree fell on us last year, they forgot to caulk around the chimney. No problem until Sandy though.

My generator is propane and I did get two more tanks of propane today at least. I do need gas for my car but at least it is a Prius and I have 2 gallons of gas in the garage for the lawn mower I can take with me to work tomorrow and use in case I don’t find gas. 2 gallons is almost 100 miles range.

Good to hear you and yours are well. We were watching NJ in horror on CNN here.

I did like the Presiden’ts response: “Whatever it takes to fix things, MAKE IT HAPPEN.”
It’s gonna be a long recovery, I think.

It seems like what a true president is supposed to say. What did you particularly like?

Can you tell her to stop crying?

Having a true president, maybe?

Ok this is for reals this time. Heading out to Warren County in the morning to clear roads.

I would much rather head down south to help but I don’t get to chose.

A friend in suburban Boston e-mailed me that a tree fell on his house, and it will cost $1000 to remove it. He’s not been able to inspect the roof yet to determine structural damage. Otherwise he and his family are fine.

I’ve already given you one warning for being a jerk in this thread – here’s another. People are dealing with major problems here, and your humor is neither funny nor appropriate nor acceptable.

I’ve not been posting here because I didn’t want my well wishes to interfer with the factual posts.

I’ve been reading this every day and sending as many prayers and well wishes as I can focus.

Please everyone, keep letting us know that you are OK. You are important and online strangers really do care.

I don’t seem to have any friends (at least on Facebook) who’ve suffered more than minor inconveniences, thank goodness.

We had some flooding in the low-lying areas of Suffolk, Virginia, though Norfolk and Virginia Beach got hit much worse.

Saw pictures of Atlantic City and NYC for the first time this morning, while munching on my hotel breakfast. They were really just horrifying. I suspect those Dopers most affected by this horrible disaster don’t have the internet access to report their status.

This event would have been a major financial hit for us but one of my husband’s incredibly generous relatives picked up our hotel tab. We’ll be here at least three days. I am back at work. I’m not really in a good mood this morning, but I see how much worse it could be.

Thankfully he’s banned now. Unbelievable callousness.

I’m just leaving to try to make my way to my office, I’ll get a train to 34th St and then walk 2-3miles. I could prpobably take a bus from 34th but I think they will be crowded and super-slow.

I really have not been able to have a meaningful conversation with anyone at work, the folks that have been making it in have no electric, cell phone or internet so I can never contact them although I’ve been getting brief e-mail updates at night.

And I’ve been packing my handbag like I’m evacuating, taking cash, medication, dry socks, flashlight and hand tools…I guess I’m nervous that something will happen and I won’t be able to get back home.

I have rarely wanted to punch someone through my computer so much before.

Under the circumstances being prepared to “camp out” is entirely prudent. Listen to that instinct! Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Do take care.

I still have not the slightest clue when my eldest will be back at school. Much of our town is still without power right now. My husband is going to attempt to get to work tomorrow via bus, bus and more bus but who the hell knows how long it will take him to get to work and back.

Ugh.
