Doesn’t sound like he would do that with a patch, and a second service call won’t make anyone involved happy. Sometimes it is worth it to simply bite the bullet and pay for the new part. It’s fine when you can do all of the work yourself, but if you have to pay a pro for a portion of the job, you might want to hand it all off to him.
