Not that I am either, but why is it considered kosher here in the SDMB for **some** people to bash Christianity (and other religions) but we won’t (or should I say CAN’T) use the word ‘gay’ to mean ‘lame’? WTF aren’t _we_ just the coolest people on the planet! One hate is just as powerful as any other. ---

Why don’t you simply use the word “lame,” if that is the meaning you intend to convey? Gay has another connotation; one that is more accepted than “lame.” The precise usage of words is a highly valued trait on these boards. ---

I’ve rarely seen people use the word “Christian” as an insult or a synonym with something undesirable - people ignorant enough to do so are flamed within an inch of their lives. It’s “kosher” to question, probe, and ponder the doctrines and practices of all religions on this board, provided that it’s done without hate speech and ignorance. “Gay” once upon a time meant “merry or happy.” On my second grade playground it meant “lame.” Languages change all the time, evolving to accept new uses for words and banish old ones. If you use the word “gay” to mean “lame”, people either a) won’t make the association, as they’ve left the second grade far behind or b) will assume you mean to be deliberately insulting to gay people. Accept it, live it, know it. ---

I gotta brush up on my reading comprehension. The OP is incomprehensible to me. “Not that I am either.” Either what? Questioning a belief is “bashing”? Heaven forfend that we should question anything here. “One hate is just as powerful as any other.” Wow, that’s quite a leap. I hate Mariah Carey and the Nazis. And you CAN use the word gay to mean “lame”. And people here CAN and WILL think you’re a moron if you do. And finally, yes, we are the coolest people on the planet. ---

I’m anti-Christian, and pro-Gay, but I do sometimes find it amusing just how quickly and strongly the anti-anti-Gary fever gets here sometimes. ---

Is Gary gay in the sense that he prefers same sex relations? Or is Gary gay in the sense that he is lame and has a bum leg? Oops… I apologize for the term bum leg and in no way meant to offend or convey any feeling of ridicule to any individual that is currently between homes. ---

The word “christian” itself is not used as an insult but I can provide a thread or two where a Christian was admonished just for his or her beliefs. Nice rant, BuddhaDog. I give it a 2.3 on a scale of 1-100. If you look at my name on the left, you’ll see that I have a crashing total of 30 posts. Most in GQ. But I’ve been registered for nearly three months and read the board every day. That means I mostly lurk, in the hope that I’ll learn enough to become a good poster. It would never occur to me to open a thread in the pit accusing members of being hypocrites. Any other observations you’d like to share with us? We’re here to learn. Well, most of us are. ---
