Speaking of misunderstood hand gestures in restaurants… a few weeks ago a friend of my wife’s invited us out for brunch for my wife’s birthday. When the waitress came to bring the check, she asked “Is this all on one ticket?” and her friend raised up her index finger. The waitress brought the bill and set it on the table in front of my wife’s friend. This is one of those places where you pay at the register up front. As we were leaving the table to go pay, there was this weird awkward conversation with my wife’s friend about splitting the bill. The waitress, my wife and I had all assumed the raised index finger meant “one ticket, and I’ve got it” but apparently what she meant was “put mine on a separate check.” ---

See: I’ll never understand a story like that. It’s clear _to me_ that your wife’s friend was trying to say, “Somebody’s pet monkey seems to have gotten loose and is currently swinging from the rafters right above our table.” ---
