> Do you really believe that Americans would have been able to tell you about these things if there were no Cheney story? It is a tad naive to think that the Cheney story had anything to do with suppressing public awareness of truly important topics.

I think that the public has barely enough attention span to pay attention to one story at once. That story could have been Katrina fraud this weekend.

Do you know something we don’t about the severity of the injuries suffered by Mr. Whittington? Perhaps it is a bit callous to make song parodies regardless of the extent of the injuries suffered, but on the other hand it is either the case that the victim suffered minor injuries and got up and was fine after being “sprayed” or “peppered” with a “pellet gun”, or there is another truth.

Or are you concerned about our lack of compassion for Dick Cheney?

Furthermore, speaking for myself, when I express problems with the lack of compassion I see among Republicans in general, it has less to do with the ability to muster up sensitivity to an anecdote involving physical injury, and more to do with caring about people more generally. For example, not doing things such as slashing social service programs in favor of tax cuts for the wealthy, or giving big pharmaceutical companies perks while raising the costs of medications for seniors. Is this really confusing to you?

And it would have had less impact on the public consciousness.

Americans get bored with numbers and misallocated funds. Shooting someone, they get. This makes more of a lasting impression on public perception than the laundry list of lies, deceit, and incompetence this administration has executed.

What’s the first negative thing people remember about Clinton’s presidency? (hint: blowjob)

Since someone mentioned about hunters shooting at people hanging out laundry, here is one of the more egregious instances:

You’ll have to scroll down about halfway to read the story about the Bangor Maine woman but here is a quote from the story:

> [@](#):
>
> And in 1988, a Bangor, Maine, woman, Karen Wood, was bringing the laundry in from her yard when she was shot and killed. The hunter, Donald Rogerson, said he mistook her white mittens for the tail of a deer. Rogerson was acquitted of manslaughter in 1990, but the public debate spurred Maine to pass a “target identification” law in 1991 to hold hunters accountable for itchy trigger fingers.

I imagine our Vice President had an itchy trigger finger too. What’s really surprising is an earlier poster mentioned that Cheney and his friends were engaged in “canned hunting”. Gee Mr Vice President, I can’t blame you for firing so quickly because you might have to walk another 100 feet before you find another quail.

Oh look Mr Vice President, we just “stumbled upon” a barrel of water with fish in it!!! Hurry up and shoot and _maybe_ you’ll have some food to bring back to the campfire.

As I stated previously, I am not anti-gun nor anti-hunting. But with clowns such as this prowling the woods, it will not be very good for the PR that hunters are well-trained, responsible citizens that always have safety as their utmost priority.

You think after 48 hours, the vice president’s people could release a statement saying that he’s sorry and horrified that this accident happened. Instead, they’ve released a statement saying that they are good for the 7 bucks worth of hunting burrecracy he forgot to pay. At the very least, this story has been a microcosym of everything that’s insane about the way the White House spins goofy stories. It’s got Karl Rove coaching the sole witness, the police being “miscommunicated” away until a day later, and so on, along with the White House issue releases blaming the victim despite experts saying that Cheney was also at fault.

Then let’s be consistent here: _“NASA Incinerates 7 Innocent Astronauts”_. Sound about right?

Why is it that in every other accidental shooting, it’s reported as such? _Girl Accidentally Shoots Playmate"_ or _Two Die In Friendly Fire Incident_ and yet this time, apparently since an unpopular individual is involved, both the media and many here insist on addressing it as _“Cheney Shoots Some Old Fuck In His Goddamn Face!”_?

That language implies intent. Is anyone here actually suggesting… Does anyone here actually believe that this was anything other than a very regrettable hunting accident? Because your language sure suggests such.

> [@BobLibDem](#):
>
> Even more significant is the behavior of the Secret Service. As I understand it, their job is to protect Cheney from criminals, not from duly authorized police. The detail that turned away the local lawmen from interviewing Cheney should be fired. Once again, it seems that Cheney thinks himself above the law. By refusing to meet the lawmen, as he is required to do, it brings to matter of alcohol into the picture. If the police had interrogated him immediately, they could have made a judgement whether to give him a breath test. Now, we’ll never know if alcohol was a factor.

Huh, how about that. Strange that the news last night said that not only did the Secret Service contact local law enforcement but they even had the sheriff acknowledge that his deputy had interviewed Cheney shortly after the accident.

Surely then you’ll be able to provide a “reputable” cite for your accusation of obstruction of justice and public drunkeness. Yes?

Not in the least. I’ve said Cheney acted stupidly and irresponsibly more than once in this thread. What I take issue with - and I’ll note there are posters from the other side of the aisle sharing my objections - is the callous joking and wishes for serious injury to Whittington. And before you jump the gun on Whittington, I’ve already said he acted stupidly and irresponsibly, too. None of that means that I’ve gotta glory in his injury - or wish it were worse. Goddamn.

For yourself, mebbe. But it seems whenever some random hi-profile conservative politico suffers a set-back of a personal or medical nature, we’ve gotta have an all-liberal, all-hogs-to-the-trough hatefest of inane, insensitive jokes about it and how that person deserves every bit and more of his physical suffering. Schadenfreude taken to the limits of absurdity. It’s very unbecoming from a bunch of folks who think - and aren’t afraid to let ya know - that their morality is of a higher order than the poor bastard who’s currently suffering. It’s disgusting. If you feel you’re qualified to disclude yourself from this characterization, have at it; I won’t quibble. But there sure are a lot of other assholes in here who can’t claim the high moral ground.

And the “jokes” aren’t even that funny. Buncha jackasses braying a buncha way-to-stupid, way-to-obvious and way-to-trite puns they’ve read in their favorite fucking blogs. What’s the point in endlessly repeating this stupid shit unless it’s to glory in the suffering of others? Or perhaps less base, but still stupid and childish, to anger and incite the folks who don’t happen share their political leanings. For **that** there’s a rather pungent 'Net term which I’m forbidden to use here. But a strong case can certainly be made that that term is entirely applicable to some of these scribblings.

What the fuck is confusing about _that_ to **you**? Fuck, man. Have you _read_ this thread? There’s some awful stuff posted here.

Of course. [From KTLA:](http://ktla.trb.com/news/ktla-cheney7,0,7400404.story?coll=ktla-news-1)

> [@](#):
>
> The Secret Service said it had turned away one sheriff’s deputy at the ranch the night of the accident because arrangements had been made for Cheney to be interviewed the following morning, Associated Press said.

Do you think you or I would be able to turn the police away from our doorstep after a shooting incident by saying, “no thanks, I’ve already made arrangements to talk tomorrow”? The Secret Service has absolutely no business in obstructing local law enforcement.

And from the [game warden report](http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/0213061cheney1.html) note that the incident occured 2/11/06 and the report is dated 2/13/06.

I don’t accuse Cheney of drunkeness. I merely note that IF alcohol was a factor one way to keep it from the light of day is to keep the law enforcement away until you get rid of the alcohol. It’s Cheney’s belief that he is above the law, with the help of the Secret Service, that prevented the local law enforcement from knowing for sure if alcohol was a factor.

**Uncle Beer** -

The fact that Cheney shot somebody is funny. Here’s why:

First, the guy will fully recover.

This administration likes to play macho and tough - they made fun of Kerry going hunting. Bush is always ‘clearing brush’ on his ranch. Cheney likes to grimace and tell people to fuck themselves - because he’s a jeans-wearing, horse-ridin’, pheasant-huntin’ summabitch!

Now he shoots a guy, and it was during a canned hunt! I don’t even think ‘hunt’ is accurate - it was a harvest.

He got caught being a doofus poser. It’s poetic justice that a guy who got 8 million draft deferments and loves declaring war and pretending he’s tough and the public buys it shot a guy STUPIDLY while playing cowboy.

Get it?

I really think the accident is a non-story, and I highly doubt that there is anything nefarious going on as far as a ‘Doobie Dick’ (Thanks **lieu** ) or a Chablis Cheney. What I _do_ find irritating is how the affair was handled. It was an accident for chrissake, and had they handled it transperantly it would already be heading for the realm of the non-story. Sure, Dick would have taken some knocks on the late night talk shows, but he’s a public figure, and should expect it.

But this administration seems to have a knee jerk reaction to any raw news, that they must first spin, obfuscate, stonewall, deny, or outright lie in response to any news items. And now it’s coming back to bite them in the ass. And I think they deserve it. Why they handled it the way they did is idiotic.
