I Am a Lawyer

Ah, two soul jokes in a row. Must be the water!

I blame the lawyers.

Good for you. If there’s one thing that this country needs, it’s more lawyers.

In case anyone’s wondering:

No, this isn’t my first career
Yes, I am employed
No, not by a big firm
Yes, in a government job
No, I don’t have a lot of debt (scholarship)
Yes, I am aware I am very lucky (although, I would argue, I also made a series of extremely prudent choices)
No, I didn’t always want to be a lawyer
Yes, I love my job

Any other questions?

Did you work part time or full-time while going to school; if yes, how did that work for you?

Congratulations! I’m so glad you have a job you like - that’s great!

Funnily enough I just got off the phone with a fellow from Legal Aid. We’re going to, in his words, “knock the rust off” me with some volunteer work, if I can get it to work out with my schedule. So I soon will be an active lawyer again.

I worked zero time while I was in school. I worked summers only.

I wouldn’t dream of working during law school, frankly. I have the utmost respect for people who find it possible to do so. I had a lot on my plate, such as being on a law review and in a clinical program in the same semester (hellish and rewarding, by turns) and an externship with the public defender another semester, was involved with some volunteer activities and and got married during law school as well. It was, at times, a struggle to get home at 10pm even without another job.

Poor you. Ensnared. Soon you will be like me. Its 11:00m pm where I am at, I have two case to argue tommorrow (damn emergency matters on a weekend), both involve major arguements. I am still in my office and have been on the go since 7 am. I have conducted a full day trial, three client conferances and submitted a written opinion today.

Pray do tell what is there to celebrate about becoming a lawyer.

And oh, congrats.

What’s to like about being a lawyer? Basically, it’s interesting. I can earn a decent wage, I meet cool people, I get to do lots of research into obscure topics, reading cases is very entertaining at times, I can argue about ampersands with like-minded folks, sometimes I get to be clever. That pretty much describes my dream job. And I work 9-5. Gubmint job dontcha know.

Sorry you’re so miserable.

Who said I am miserable? Just complaining. Welcome to the club. You’ll be doing the same soon enough, bitching all the time, about being overworked but being absolutly delighted with work that you get. I think if we failed to act in such a way, we would probably get debarred.

My Monday trial pleaded out, so I’m working from home in shorts and sandals today. Just thought you’d want to know.

Good for you. Even if you stick to uncontested matters, you’ll be freeing up someone else to deal with the nasty stuff. Welcome to the side of the Jedi.

Congratulations! Wishing you luck and joy in your new career!
