From context I think the second version is involved here, they come across as the sort of anti-American person who thinks America is the source of all evil and Americans deserve to suffer. I’ve often gotten in arguments with such people using similar rhetoric, who think _any_ cost is acceptable for doing any harm at all to the Ultimate Evil of America. Basically imagine a crusading religious fanatic, then exchange “Satan” for “America”. ---

Lol, when Bush the younger was president, i tried to pass as Canadian when i was traveling. I never actually claimed to be Canadian, but maybe i wore a maple leaf or adopted a slightly Canadian accent. ---

I knew kids pretending to be Canadian way back in the 60s and 70s on their year abroad trips. Most Europeans couldn’t tell the difference, so it was easy. ---

I never actually claimed to be Canadian. But i sure tried to avoid anything that suggested “USA”, and it’s easier to look Canadian than to look Irish. ---
