I like that they take over the job of living symbols for the nation. The PM and MPs don’t have nearly as much pressure for photo ops and meet and greets and the other stupid trappings of office that their American counterparts have (so much so they even get out of practice, as Gordon Brown will tell you). If we had a living breathing Uncle Sam we wouldn’t have to gnash our teeth over flag pins, the lettice our president eats and the cause de jour of the First Lady. And it might make our citizens think more about the actions of their representatives rather than what the person themselves represent. ---
