In mid-October of 2002, before I had ever gone to my first meeting or talked to anyone, I posted a thread in MPSIMS confessing that I was an alcoholic (under my old username). I was just too afraid to actually say that to somebody face to face. I kind of expected to get a lot of jeering, snide, gag posts, but instead got a lot of responses by people congratulating me & encouraging me to kick the habit (habits plural actually). It took a few weeks, but on Nov. 30th, '02, I finally started a real day-count, took it one day at a time…and lo & behold I’m five years off the sauce (and the bong too!) It’s amazes me a bit, given that I can still recall a time where I couldn’t go two days without alcohol and not get sick. (And two days was about the longest I’d gone in years.) So I just want to say that I have a tremendous amount of gratitude for everyone who posted to my thread five years ago and gave me their support! Thank you one & all. ---

Way to go! Get a nice 5 year chip! When I’m among friends who have more than 5 years of sobriety and who are all working good programs, we consider the one of us with the most sobriety to be the one who woke up earliest that day. ---
