I am Legend - Open Spoilers

The storylines weren’t similar at all. Are you sure you’re not thinking of a different movie?

Yes - they showed the Honda name.

Saw the movie a couple of weeks ago and have been reading through this thread.
A coupla thing…

The Deer. Someone raised a question about how deer got on the island. Easy. The water around New York freezes frequently in the winter. It would be pretty easy for any wildlife to cross onto Manhattan.

The Mustang. - He only used it for fun. In fact, it was probably the first time he used it. If you look closely, you will notice it still had the stickers on it from the car lot.

**How did the girl and boy get into Manhattan? ** - Not hard, it’s not like they were trying to get to Martha’s Vineyard or something far offshore. A rowboat would do the trick. They could probably find one pretty easily. Or a bridge could have been left open, as an earlier poster suggested. I don’t think either is implausible.

The woman’s car. I don’t think we know for sure if the car she takes to Vermont is the same car she used to rescue Neville. That car had UV lights on the roof. The car in Vermont didn’t.

The lab in his basement. He moved it there. Clearly, he wasn’t working there when he picked up his wife and child to take them to the helicopter.

The Zombie Society - Yes, there are signs of intelligence. The set a trap for him, and there is one Zombie calling the shots in the attack on the docks and the attack on his house.

FWIW, there is apparently a moderately sized herd of deer who live in Central Park. This seems to be the most reasonable explanation for this.

Never heard that. I’ve had a partial case of 10w30 oil in my garage for 3 or 4 years with no explosions. Hell, we’ve got stores and gas stations around here that have probably had some of their oil a lot longer than that.

If he’s smart he can put fuel stabilizer in the gasoline and keep it “fresh” much longer. There’s one brand called “Sta-Bil” that’s commonly used for motors that will be stored over the winter.
Saw this movie last night. So many awesome touches, and just the plain look and feel of the deserted NYC was amazing. Some random thoughts:

-I guess he knew the streets pretty well the way he drove the Mustang around all the obstacles. But him chasing the deer with it seemed pretty reckless and stupid to me.

-Why wouldn’t he just get up on a high place like an overpass and wait for the deer to come by? I would think that an intelligent man would know you’re not going to get a deer by chasing it.

-I came into this thread about the trap he fell into. Seems like an equal number of people believe that he set it and the Alpha Male set it. I hadn’t considered that the Alpha Male set it, although it would make sense. But I can’t see how Alpha would have the mental capacity to plan it out.

-Too many “BOO!!!” cheap scares with sudden sound and movement, even when it wasn’t something that was actually scary.

-I agree that the last 1/3 of the movie seemed less polished than the first 2/3. I was riveted to the first 2/3.

-The zombies didn’t look that good, the unhinged jaw thing really didn’t work for me.

-I guess the zombies were “sleeping” in the bank vault or wherever that was that Neville chased his dog?

Used motor oil?

No not used motor oil, just motor oil. As far as a shelf life of gasoline, that might refer to the fact that it tends to attract water. Ethanol in particular seems to have this problem.

For what it’s worth, it never occurred to me he hadn’t fallen for his own trap. He was seeing mannequins move at that point, wasn’t he? Or just about?

What indicates that he set the trap? There was no blood around, and vampires have no interest in mannequins. If they did, the mannequins he set up around the city wouldn’t have lasted more than one night.

The fact that he saw Fred turning his head may have just been a quick visual way to indicate that, since Fred had moved to a new location (apparently of his own volition), Dr. Neville subconsciously registered him as “alive”/“real”.

I saw the mannequin move. That means I’m seeing things through Neville’s eyes. We’ve gone a little nuts at this point. We’re working up our courage to talk to the “new” mannequin at the video store.

Mannequins don’t move, zombies don’t move mannequins (I saw it move on my own) so there’s no reason to believe a zombie set the trap.

You mean, from Neville’s perspective there’s no reason to believe a vampire set the trap. Are you claiming to be as secluded and stir-crazy as Neville?

Other than the fact that the head zombie was waiting there with his dogs on a chain?

I saw zombie dogs but didn’t see the chain part.

The thing is, if you put mannequins out and then come back later and want to hit on them, it’s entirely possible you’ve set traps which you’ll come back later and fall for. Neville’s reality was getting blurry.

Well about his rank it was probably done on purpose. I heard that the reason why hollywood messes up so much is that they HAVE to so it wont be considered impersonating an officer.

Of course the mutants set the trap for Neville. While it was similar enough to Neville’s earlier trap to indicate that they got the idea from him, there were enough differences to indicate that it was not Neville’s trap.

  1. It was too far away from the hole in the wall of the building. To catch a darkseeker the trap would have been right by the hole.

  2. Fred had been moved there. Why would Neville move Fred there, and place him between the hole in the wall and the rope?

  3. Neville was far enough gone that he didn’t recognize that it could be a trap, and he saw Fred’s head move, but I don’t believe he was THAT far gone, to forget about a trap he had set and walk into it himself.

  4. The head mutant was right there, waiting. With the dogs.

  5. In his earlier trap, he had set out a tarp so that the mutant wouldn’t get burned by the sun. There was no tarp at the 2nd trap.

I saw this again because my husband hadn’t seen it yet. I still liked all the scenes of a deserted New York, and still think Smith’s acting was good, but in general it didn’t hold up for me and I have no interest in seeing it again. I do want to read the book though.

I think I Am Legend is worth seeing just to see how Neville survives day-to-day in deserted NYC, even if there were no zombie vampires in the movie.

Well I broke down and watched this.

(sigh)
Where do the deer come from? Are there that many deer at the Zoo? Who the fuck let the animals out of their cages? “Lets see, most people are violently sick, the bridges are blown up. Society is breaking down, I’ll guess I’ll let the lions out.” The deer hunting had me laughing out loud. I wonder if Neville even knows how to skin and cut up a deer?
The dark building when the dog runs in?

I was wondering why in this situation, he didn’t carry FLARES!

I would surround my house with UV Lights and have a safe room with nothing but UV lights but then again I have the sense that god gave geese.

How in the hell did she get on and off the island? I guess being really really good looking is the key to being immune. I expected Zoolander to show up.
I did like the painting he had in his apartment. Good idea there.

But the Bob Marley ‘best album ever’ joke was too much.

As posted earlier in the thread, there may be bridges left undestroyed (maybe the pilots got infected before they could fly their mission), or the deer may have been able to cross frozen water to reach the island. Undestroyed bridges or a boat could have brought the woman and child to Manhattan.

He obviously didn’t know how to hunt, I would have sat on an overpass or other high place and just waited.

Was the album comment a joke? I think his character was serious about that. Yeah it was fluff, but I think it’s an attempt to tell us more about the Neville character. Also, the “Don’t Worry” song is rather fitting for Neville’s situation.

Deer Can Swim

I sometimes wonder that the people that nit pick about trivial stuff in films actually pay attention to the film they’re critiquing.

Yes, the head mutant set the trap for Neville. He clearly had the two mutant dogs on leashes.

Yes, the mutants have some hierarchy, the head mutant is shown barking instructions during Neville’s suicide attempt and the attack on Neville’s townhouse.

Again, the deer thing is easily explained. He’s been on alone in Manhattan for three years, long enough for deer to cross onto the island in winter.

Getting to Manhattan is not that difficult. You don’t think there is one rowboat or sailboat sitting around New Jersey?

I also think some people are misreading the deer hunt. Of course there are easier ways to hunt deer. But, he’s not desperate for food, he has plenty of food. But he is pretty bored. That’s why he takes a high powered Mustang and races around the streets of Manhattan.
