When The Beatles were in their prime, girls, not just teen-agers, would often scream, yell, almost as if they were in a hypnotic spell. Same true with a lot of groups. On Leno, when N`sync came on stage, it seemed the whole audience of young females were swooning etc. My question: is the reaction of the generally teenage females sexual in part? hormonal? Crush…Infatuation? or just a high over the guys and the music played? Would like to hear your opinions including those of you who experienced what I’m trying to describe.

::slinking directly from the “Things You Would Never Admit in Public” thread::

I was…one of the New Kids on the Block fans. I would have to say it is a combination of sexuality, hormones, a crush, infatuation, peer pressure and group mentality (as in a group of people enjoying the same thing–not the musical group) that causes girls to scream and swoon. As for me, it never was a matter of the music being good. There. That’s one answer from someone in the know. The things I reveal in the effort to fight ignorance…

::slinking away now, confident that no one will ever take anything I say seriously again::

I think it has a lot to do with the music being played. I think one of the NSYNC boys is cute (the dark haired one; his name is initials of some sort), but he doesn’t make me swoon. However, I saw REM in concert last summer in Athens, GA and become a total girl. I have a mad crush on Mike Mills, the bass player, and although he isn’t very stereotypically attractive, he drives me wild. Even if I just hear one of their songs on the radio, I get all giggly and excited.

Hey, evilbeth, it’s okay, I was there, too. In fact, last summer, due to being somewhat forced by a friend, I attended…a Joey McIntyre concert. I am still embarrassed about it.

Anyway, I think it’s the group mentality. I remember when I was 14 that I could sit and watch my “Hangin’ Tough” video alone and remain completely sane. However, if a friend was over, we’d get all giggly stuff. I can’t believe I ever behaved that way…

Oh Lord, I blush to recall, I was a Beatlemanic back in the sixties. I remember screaming myself hoarse. My personal analysis: Early on, before the music started, the screaming started as an attempt to get them to notice me–“hey here i am, Paul, George, yooo hoo.” I’m not sure if this was logical or just what we thought we should do. Each of us would just get louder and louder, more and more frenzied, until hysteria set in.

During the music, the screaming, swooning was an attempt to show our own friends our devotion. “See I like them more than you do, I’m a better fan, watch me faint.”

## Getting hysterical and worked up was really kinda fun and a tremendous release for general teenage over-reaction to everything. Plus our parents thought we were nuts–what more encouragement does a 14 year old need?

inconceivable? i don’t think that word means what you think it does

Threads such as this make me glad that I’m not a girl.

No offense, of course…

Well, MadSam, I don’t happen to think I’m sexist. I imagine that there are some boys who like a musical performer because of how they look, and they scream, faint and get all flustered when in their presense…

Oh wait. No, I DON’T think I’ve ever heard of any boys who acted like this, actually…

Does that make me sexist?

I remember reading an interview with the Beatles where they noted that most of their fans in France were male (why, they didn’t know). They could tell because the screaming was at a much lower pitch than anywhere else in the world.

The more I think about it, I would tend to see merit in evilbeth’s comment about group mentality. I personally love Jackie Mason’s humor…I remember going into a big auditorium in Hollywood and laughing almost beyond contol. I bought the tape, listened to the same stuff alone and could barely muster up even a smile.
