Blackbird - well you could always ask Matthew Sheppard what its like to be gay in America. He’d probably do some petty whining no doubt. I am not gay but I can easily see what a damned liability it is to have that sexual orientation. I live in Massachusetts - yeah we have legal gay marriage here. Has it destroyed the moral fibre of the state, the country, the world? Hell no. Some people are _much_ too touchy on that subject though. As far as homosexuality “going against nature”? What a crock of shit !! I’d love to tell Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, etc that things such as television, computers, credit cards, and so on are nowhere to be found in nature (or the Bible for that matter). Therefore televangelists should get their ugly faces off the television screen and go preach out in the middle of a field. (getting back to nature right?) Oh and don’t use a PA Sysytem because I have never seen a grizzly bear or a snowy egret using one of those (nor Moses or Jesus). Oh and when they a$k for contributions by all means they should not accept those unnatural credit cards. Tools of the Devil - that’s what they are. Just one more thing I wish the fundamentalists would get through their heads. Try reading more than just one fucking book !!! You might actually _learn_ something. ---

Straight woman, relocated from downtown Vancouver and a job in the heart of the gay district to Calgary, Alberta chiming in. Gosh darnit (fucking shit) I’m sick to death of anti-gay rhetoric. Seriously. I have never met so many straight ignorant people in my life. I’ve lived a relatively sheltered life, my friends and family being (relatively) liberal in attitude. Here, though… goodness. The only gay bar I’ve found is a hole in the wall, and people express anti-gay bullshit like this was America pre-civil rights. I’m so fucking sick of it. I remember a “Kids in the Hall” sketch where Dave Foley was analyzing the word “faggot” and trying to figure out why it riled folks up so much. He determined that the problem was the “T”, I have used the word “faggo” as much as possible ever since. I’d say we’ve found our latest opponent. As others have said, society didn’t offer civil unions; in fact, in some states civil unions have been explicitly made illegal. Nothing **Sampiro** has said is an exaggeration. I’m a straight woman who’s rather thoroughly and sappily in love with a man who is just as thoroughly and sappily in love with me. I can kiss him good-bye in public, bring him to my church, talk about him at work, and induce saccharine poisoning in waiters at restaurants because we’re so busy holding hands and looking in each others’ eyes that we haven’t noticed we’ve been there for two hours, (yes, we do make up for it with the tip) and no one’s going to say anything except, “Aww! How cute!” and maybe, “So, you two going to get married?” If **Sampiro** were to try that with someone he loved, he’d be accused of being disgusting, immoral, lewd and God knows what else. Rather than being encouraged to marry, he’s told that his desire to marry destroys the institution of marriage itself. Then again, perhaps women shouldn’t have complained when our career options were pretty much limited to secretary, teacher, or nurse and any woman who wasn’t married by 25 or 30 was a pitiful, hopeless old maid. :rolleyes: I assume you’ve got a life which suits you. They DO have the same rights as marriage. Marriage has a vaguely religous overtone, civil union does not. If I ever felt the need (as a straight woman) to become legaly joined to someone, I would definitely use the civil union option. No god stuff…same desire to be recognised as a couple and celebrate that fact with friends. I am very happy civil unions are now an option in NZ. ---
