I hope you’re right, because otherwise it’s pathetic. (A little hilarious, but also pathetic.) BTW, I thought perhaps after the Boston bombing people might realize that not all Muslims are Arabs and even include white people (real Caucasians!).

One thing to note is that there appears to be a high proportion of teenagers in the selection. That doesn’t excuse the bigotry, but it helps explain it, i think.
I need only look at my own history. Had Twitter been around when i was 15, i could see myself making some dumbass racist tweet like that. My friends and i, and indeed most people at my predominantly-white high school, lived every day in a sort of casual racist bubble, telling jokes about, and making fun of, the Greek and Vietnamese and Lebanese immigrants that lived in our area of south-west Sydney, and using racial slurs to describe Australia’s indigenous people.
We didn’t go looking for people to insult or hurt; it was just between us. But we happily bought into the idea that all Aborigines were lazy drunks, that Greeks and Lebanese and other “wogs” were dirty, and that those slopey-eyed Asians should speak English and/or go back where they came from.
And i was an immigrant myself! The irony.
I’m not proud of any of that, and i’m glad that i left it behind very quickly after i left high-school and grew up. I hold out hope that some of these idiots can do the same.
Edit: i should add, by the way, that none of my bigotry could be blamed on my mother, who would have been horrified to hear me say any of that stuff. Some of the teachers at our school, however, did buy into the racial stereotyping.
