It means lots of things; the systemically constructed syllabary of Chinese means that any one syllable word will have several homophones. I take it seriously, because I have to put up with it a lot. I’m studying Chinese in &\*(% Indiana and plan to be a Chinese major. All the freaking time, idiots are asking me, “so, how’s the Japanese going?”, despite the fact that I’ve been studying it for 2 years and I’ve told them a thousand times that it’s Chinese. A few weeks back, a student in my Linguistics class explained to our (ethnic Chinese) prof that he yells jibberish face ‘Chinese’ at a (ethnic Chinese) student in our class because “all those Asian languages sound the same.” So excuse me for being a little bitchy. If you lived in Indiana, you’d be cranky too. –John ---
