What fresh new vapid hell is this? The admin assistant that sits within direct line of sight and earshot keeps uttering this annoying little phrase throughout the day to various people that come by her workstation. I don’t know why. I don’t know in what context she feels the need to appreciate these random people. But she says it in this overly sweet and drawn out tone that makes my hair bristle. God I hate people. ---

I hear it pretty often here in Tennessee, but it usually comes out as, " 'preciate ya." ---

I’m with **QuickSilver** on this one. We have a woman in the office who does something similar. Very often, too often in my opinion, she pops into my office and says, “You know, I really appreciate everything you do for me!” in this chirpy, syrupy voice. It just feels strained and as if she’s trying to draw attention to herself by showing me how “aware” she is. If you really want to show some appreciation, be more considerate of me and my time. Don’t make your lack of planning into a crisis that I have to fix (time and time again) and _then_ tell me how much you appreciate me. I don’t hate her for it, but I don’t like it much either. Grr. :dubious: ---

I’m not sure. Would either of the two scenarios you presented make it okay? I don’t think so. You say ‘grumpy’ like it’s a bad thing. …and yeah, when I say I hate her, it’s hyperbole. ---

You know, back in the day, people got kinda pissed off because everybody was saying “Have a nice day!” Then somebody pointed out that most of them seemed to mean it, and the ire kinda died down. ---

I am a mental health counselor and I have a client who says “I appreciate you” many many many times in a conversation. When she’s psychotic and or high…it is mostly sarcastic. But there are times when I know that she really means it. ---

Yes, I have a tendency to tell people I appreciate that I appreciate them. Not every day, but enough that they won’t forget it. Jeez-Louise, since when is expressing gratitude a bad thing? I don’t understand misanthropes. ---

People usually tell me they appreciate me right after they’ve made me do extra work. Often it’s extra work I wouldn’t have had to do if they’d done what _they_ were supposed to do in the first place. I appreciate the meaning of “I appreciate you” for what it is. It neither makes me feel warm nor fuzzy. ---

A sales rep that calls me almost daily often ends his calls with “well, we appreciate you”. Maybe he’s including other random people in the company? I always knew he meant it though. I was certain he appreciated me the first time I got a personal check from him in the mail, and even more so when I got the second one, and the next. Take the praise, be it false or not.
