My octogenarian grandfather insisted on taking my mother & I to our county Republican Party’s annual dinner. He & my grandmother were regular attendees, but she died three years ago, and he was quite ill last year. It was more boring than offensive (4 rum & cokes helped). Mostly the focus was on _local_ officials. Only one speaker mentioned McCain and only half the room applauded. There was alot of talk about how “this is a trying time to be a Republican” 😃 and how “we” need to united behind the party’s nominee no matter what. Obama was mentioned several times (the local chair even described our state representative as having “Obama-rockstar” qualities). The closet any speaker came to mentioning her name was “both Democratic candidates”. Other than the rolls and sundae the food sucked. ---

I went to a couple Lincoln Day dinners nearby because friends had extra tickets. A lot of speeching, decent food and lots of bars in the room, so no lines. Oh, and they were on the riverboat, so we all adjourned to gamble afterwards. ---

When I was twenty, I went to the after parties in various hotel rooms for the state Republican Convention. One of my friends worked for a house delegate and he had to go. I was in town, so he invited me along for a lark. It was fun. I wore a sleeveless dress, so I had to keep my arms down in order to avoid scaring the Republicans with my dirty hippy hairy armpits. I thoroughly enjoyed the elected officials handing me alcoholic drinks, but as far as parties went, it wasn’t the best. Old conservative men just don’t do much for me. ---

[/QUOTE] I think its good you atttended… its always good to see how others perceive things, especially when you disagree. It gives you an opportunity to find out how they tick.. or what they value. When you think about it, both republicans and dems want the best things for the country… they just happen to differ on what these things are… ---

[/QUOTE] Local political party dinners are not a great way to discover how the Other Side ticks or what they value, because at those venues AFAICT both parties value speeches, rubber chicken dinners, and booze. If someone knocked you out with a two-by-four and you woke up at this sort of dinner, I think you’d be hard-pressed to say if it was the Republican or Democrat version. Either way, you’d want that person to hit you with the two-by-four again and wake you when it was over. ---
