I for one was sorry when Thaidog was banned. He’s seriously one of the funniest writers who ever visited these boards. I emailed back and forth with him a bit after he was banned, but the bloom was off the rose, and our paths eventually diverged. Oh plus he was really cute; could be mistaken for Keanu Reeves without much squinting at all. ---

You did quite well. thank you kindly. I do take issue with the premise that I am “owned” by one sentence (I assume that 133t adheres to most grammar rules). Methinks owning should require a bit more evidence, no? I have an urge to write in Ubby-Dubby, but am now late for work. 🙂 ---

Cute or not, I could never figure out his obsession with Reeves. And I found his posts amusing. But was there any specific reason for his banning? Everyone predicted it would happen, and a few said he was a troll. At worst, to me, he was just incomprehensible. ---

Being “owned” is more like being utterly dominated or humiliated by another. Say I beat you in a chess match that lasted 4 hours, that’s simply winning. If I beat you in 4 moves (not sure if that’s even possible, just trying for something that might make sense), then you were owned. Also, if you fell for some practical joke, you were owned. I imagine it started in video gaming when one player would soundly thrash another, hence “owning” him. ---

The standard 4-move beginner’s mate is something along the lines of: 1 e4 e5, 2 Bc4 Nc6, 3 Qh5 Nf6, 4 Qxf7 mate. There’s even a 2-move mate, but White has to really _want_ to throw the game for it to happen, because almost nobody, no matter how terrible a player, would play White this way while trying to win: 1 f3 e4, 2 g4 Qh4 mate. [/aside] We really need a FAQ about phrases that pop up here a lot, but rarely do elsewhere. For instance, I’ve assumed the “masturbating like a motherfuck” phrase comes from a porn spam email header, but I’ve never bothered to ask. ---

Well, this thread has evolved, hasn’t it. Wish I had more time today to participate! Sometimes I love doing IRC with my nephew. It’s often a fascinating study in1337010gy. One thing I’ve noticed is somehow, leet insults have the effect of disarming the insulted. If you come up with a particularly clever put-down, the object of derision cannot help but be overcome with mirth, and hence the contest becomes less about who is the best snowborder or PS2/Tony Hawk player, and more about leet skills. I’m guessing this whole phenomenon is really an evolved form of the dozens. Plus, I must admit, it’s just damn funny to watch these kids go at it, even as an adult? “OMFG! j00 r so teH sux0rzzz, j00 n00b! | w|11 p0wn0rzz j00 w|7 my m4d sk|11zzzzz!” ---

So…just to get things straight (dope): did the phrase “I burning your dog” have currency before the “Rock in the Box” thread, or was this little gem an entirely new coinage from friend Thaidog (to the best of our knowledge, I mean?) It’s just that I’ve never been present before at the first usage of a net-wide catchphrase (and I remember reading the thread that day). Just like to know if I saw history in the making. /needs a life ---
