I caught a stray cat! Advice?

:pI started a thread but I have to post here too! My friend called me to tell me that her husband found a kitten in a garbage bag on his trash truck. I’m bringing her home as soon as the vet is finished with her–she will have to have one eye removed due to an injury. She’s beautiful, about 4 months old, and she has extra toes!!!
I couldn’t be more excited!

How cool for you! I’ll be looking forward to seeing the pictures.

Are you saying that somebody dumped a kitty in a garbage bag? That’s horrible. I’m so glad your friend’s husband found her. Lucky kitty to to find her way to a good home after such an awful thing.

papergirl,
I’m happy for you and your new kitty!

Yes. Friend’s husband delivers a semi-load of trash from our local landfill to one about 90 miles away. When he untarped it, he heard meowing, and tromped around in a truck full of garbage until he found her. She’d been left in a garbage bag, for who knows how long. It’s amazing that she even survived.
I tried to convince myself that she’d been so injured that her owner thought she was dead and threw her away–that’s what I’d prefer to believe, at least–but aside from the eye, she’s beautiful and obviously healthy.
My friends are Good People.

So are you, to take her in and love her and show her (along with your friends) that all humans don’t suck.

As I’m out of work due to my company being bought by another company (which may go bankrupt, therefore everyone may lose their severance. Good times.), it’s the perfect time to update everyone on Arthur’s progress! Arthur is the cat that I had found as a stray under our deck.

He islooking great, or at least he thinks so. He’s gained weight, and is probably the nicest cat I’ve ever had. He really enjoys sleeping in the crook of one’s arm, or on your chest, nuzzled against your chin all night long. I’m very happy that he came to our house.

He has assimilated well with the other cat and the horrid dog: Proof!

The only thing left is to work on his throwing up issue, he seems perfectly healthy but every couple of days he’ll throw up at night. He drinks a lot of water, could this be part of the problem?

Handsome fella there! So glad his story had a great ending! Pretty dog, too!

No, drinking lots of water is good. Two common causes for this are:

  • bolting her food down too fast. Feral cats especially have learned to do this. She may grow out of this, as she learns that it’s safe to eat in your house, and nobody’s going to chase her away or steal her food there.
  • Worms. It often takes more than one dose of wormer to get rid of all of them. Give another dose as soon as your Vet says it’s OK.

He’s very handsome! if he’s eating too fast, you can get something like this to slow down his consumption. He’ll have to reach into the tubes and fish out his food bit by bit.

PapSett,
Thanks!

t-bonham@scc.net,
I’m taking him in for another follow up check up so I’ll ask about potential worms.

He does eat aggressively. In fact, he eats people food (if he can get away with it). He’ll blatantly snake out one of his mutant paws and drag food right off your plate. (He also steals the food/water of the dog!)

StGermain,
Thank you for the suggestion!

I agree bolting might be an issue - I had a cat who had been stray who would gulp down his food them vomit.

Another thing is, he might be a bit sensitive to one of the cat food ingredients. I bought the Petsmart store brand (Authority?) for “sensitive systems” (no beef, no corn, no… something else) and it was a huge help with kitty puking.

Well, look at that handsome young fella! My cats barf all the time, too - I think bolting their food is mostly the problem here, too - everything down the hatch, then everything right back up again. Siamese are terrible for barfing - one of my cats is part Siamese, and she barfs. Arthur looks like he might have some Siamese in him, and he may always barf a little. Barf. The word has lost all meaning.

Cat Whisperer - Look at the feeder in my link - it might slow them down and provide some environmental stimulation.

I have two siamese and neither is barfy.

They probably would enjoy that - I’ll have to look into it.

Just wanted to pop in and mention that it could be hairballs!

Especially if he’s inside now (warmer environs = faster shedding) and safe and happy so that he can spend proper time grooming himself (more licking = more hair in the system).

My stupid long-haired cat gets lovely sessions (he’s doing one right now in fact - we get to go see the vet tomorrow, yay!) where he gets a little stressed and his fur starts shedding faster - he grooms himself more to get it smooth, and presto! Hairball stuck in the windpipe. Just enough of an irritation that he hacks and gags and nothing ever happens.

Vet gives medicine to slick down what’s already working it’s way through the tummy, and snakes out the little bits currently in the windpipe, and sometimes he numbs the windpipe so it doesn’t feel itchy for a while, and stupid cat is good to go until the next time he decides he’s going to be stressed out.

Hi,
I had a cat with digestive problems and I gave him plain yogert, and then switched to gluten free food. Maybe stress from what he went through put his system out of wack. You are so wonderful to have rescued him, I am thankful for people like you in this world.

Thanks!

And quite a few ideas here as to what could help him with his throwing up problem, it is appreciated!

Yeah, one of my rescues was a vomity cat too. We tried everything, but it didn’t stop until a couple years ago when we finally had surgery for his hyperthyroidism. He stopped bolting his food, now eats small amounts more often, and only yarks when he has a hairball.
