I’ve had a PS3 for a while now and I like it. I use it mainly as a Blu-Ray player but I do have a few games for it.

The problem I am having is connecting it to a second TV. I initially had it connected to a 1080p TV with a HDMI cable and no problems. That TV is in my living room now and I want to hook up the PS3 to my Samsung DLP in my bedroom so I can watch movies before I go to bed. I went out and got the component cable for the PS3 but I can only get it to work with the 480i/480p input. Nothing I try can get the signal to work when the PS3 is hooked into the 720p input.

I have tried what Sony suggests and held the power button to reset the video output, but that doesn’t help. What am I doing wrong?

From what I understand, DVD Forum (and Blu-Ray group) rules both prohibit sending high-resolution (720p or higher, original or upconverted) over component cables, since component cables are analog and unencrypted (meaning easy to rip the video signal from). To get a higher resolution with the PS3, you have to use either DVI (with an HDMI-to-DVI converter) or HDMI supporting HDCP.

Essentially, what JayRx said. Sony have decided to not allow full-scale transmissions through component cables, allegedly because the manufactorers are afraid of piracy.

Ironically, it’s already easy to pirate Blu-Ray films using a few simple Windows programs. It’s not foolproof, but it’s not hard either.

HDCP and it’s “content-control” are mostly just smoke-screens to force a great many people to buy new TV’s/AV systems.
