Man, nothing sucks quite like watching the days grow shorter. I’m convinced I suffer from a mild case of SAD (seasonal affective disorder) and I just can’t stand having less and less daylight. Eventually the sun will be going down at 4:30 in the afternoon! How fucked up is that? This has always been a big deal for me, but it has gotten even worse since I’ve gotten old and my eyesight is wonky. Artificial light just sucks. If I lived in England I’d kill myself inside a year. _sigh_ So true. Soon it’ll be back to the troglodyte existence: Drive to work in the dark, work in a windowless office, drive home in the dark. Then it’ll snow on the weekends. Can you say, “pasty?” I knew you could. ---

Heh. Polar opposite here. I love winter for a variety of reasons, one of them being the shorter days/longer nights. I can’t deal with summer and only tolerate autumn because it means winter is coming. Spring is pretty but always depresses me because it means the end of winter. ---

I’m with Opal. I must have gone native or something. When I first moved out here (Seattle), I couldn’t stand the constant rain. Now summers bug me. I find myself thinking, “Damn the sun! All it gives me are glare headaches!” I’m really looking forward to our rainy season here. ---

Because I work mostly nights, I love the fact that summer has many hours of light. I get very depressed even over one day that is just gray and dark…now if it snows I can handle it but if it’s gray to be gray then FUCK IT then it’s not worth it…I am bitchier than any female on this board could be with their worst PMS. I love the sun, but hate extreme heat. I love it when it’s 65º to 75º F and the sun is shining and there is no snow in the forecast. Shoot I can even handle it in the 30s with sunshine but give me sun anyday. Sun makes me happy. ---

Yuck sun is bad. I’m a night person so I love winter time not only 'cause it’s dark but also ‘cause cold weather is frickin’ awesome. I’m happiest when the temp is below freezing. ---

Stoid , You wouldnt last long in Helsinki let me tell you. …and even further North ? Nah! Mind you neither do most .Highest suicide rate in the world for young males because of next to know sun for 6 months.(Seasonal affective disorder and fake sun lamps the order of the day). Will never forget the sight of the sun popping up justabove the horizon at midday …hovering to the left for an inch or two and then disappearing again quicker than you could say “Good Afternoon , Good Morning and Goodnight!” (about 20 minutes all told). Shudder , let me just take a second to go out and worship the Irish Ra that has the sun turned on for almost 6 full hours in a day (clouds nonwithstanding). ---

Take up astronomy you will love the long dark nights. It works for me…once you see saturn with its rings your hooked…have a good one… ---

For some reason the UK oil industry has to base itself in places like Aberdeen and Invergordon, both further north than Moscow. Not to worry , my next contract is back in the states - and will involve lots of time in Alaska. Crap. I think I’m going to just dispense with sight and start learning to emit bat-like radar. ---

I could really do without hot, muggy days too. Although this past summer wasn’t that bad; if this is what global warming does, I’m all for it. As for the light, I have noticed within the past few years a growing depression during the late autumn and winter; however, St. John’s Wort pretty much cuts it off at the knees. I do like watching the seasons change and the days grow longer or shorter; I’d get bored silly in the tropics. Actually I think I might like living in Sweden: 18 hours of daylight with comfortably cool temperatures in summer, and plenty of snow in winter. ---

Back when an Alaskan, in winters the sun would rise after we got to work and set before we left. If it was cloudy on weekends (which it often was) it might be 2 or 3 weeks before you were back out in the sun. It was like being Stevie Wonder’s feces. The only way to get through the SAD was some form of recreational exercise. Used to cross country ski almost every night. Otherwise the down in the dumps were almost too much to handle. ---

Albeit with sympathy for the SADs, I’m another winter vote. Took me years after getting out of school to realize it, of course! Not only am I sensitive to light, but winter offers better fashions, better holidays, and a quieter neighborhood. Bring on the night. ---
