The snipe at BrainGlutton in the RIP Carlin thread in Cafe Society, just as an example, was completely gratuitous, unprovoked, and born out of a personal hate-on for BrainGlutton (and presumably his politics). You can argue that BG invited it first by claiming that Carlin’s rhetoric was true, but it was a Carlin appreciation thread, first and foremost.
Many of our political posters are snippy and snide in political threads, but at least they usually have the good sense to keep it there.
No, it isn’t - my point is that posters ourselves take somewhat of an active role in keeping things civil around here (and rightly so - the boards are what we make them). It doesn’t have to be “ignore everything” or “ban everything” - I think we mostly play in the middle.
Bet you can think of a number of posters that are obnoxious that skirt the golden dope rule. You probably won’t have to try very hard.
Certainly. But it’s not about being obnoxious, it’s about being a jerk. Weirddave acted like a jerk, and then here’s the kicker, didn’t stop when warned.
One can possibly claim that the folks who insist on adding signoffs to their posts instead of putting them in the signatures are being obnoxious, because they know full well it annoys other posters. But the mods haven’t officially asked them to stop, and if they did and the posters continued to insist on the signoffs, then they’d be crossing into warning/suspension/banning territory.
Really, that’s what it boils down to. If I find you obnoxious, I have to deal. If the mods find you obnoxious enough to warn you about it, then it’s on you. They have the authority here.

We’re a little less capricious than that I hope. Using your example, some people here find signoffs obnoxious, others don’t. Who’s right? It’s a taste thing, not to mention that it wasn’t a big deal in any way. Insults and trolling actually do affect the quality of the board, so there are rules about them.
Right, exactly. My point was there’s a difference between being obnoxious and being an outright jerk. I would expect, and what I see overall bears out that expectation, that mods have a much higher tolerance for what constitutes jerkishness than regular posters.
Not disagreeing with you. It’s just in this case, given the threads posted as evidence, it seems weak. I think three out of the five would have been unofficial knock it offs to someone less abrasive. I have agreed with almost every banning that I have seen, even ones that had a lot of objections. This one made me shake my head. I never had the occasion to butt heads with Dave. If I had maybe I would have felt different. I can only go by what was shown. Not much more I can say about it.
And if I had boobs I’d be a girl. If Weirddave had been less abrasive, maybe they would have been unofficial knock it offs, not official warnings. But he was that abrasive. “You’re mistaken” and “You’re a dumbshit” arguably mean the same thing, but one will get you warned in GD and the other won’t.
I wouldn’t want to be the one drawing the line between these two.

Huh. Well, I think this is a shame - just as it’s a shame when any long time poster gets banned. However, I certainly noticed that Dave’s posts had been really, really nasty lately. I don’t even go in GD much at all and I noticed it. And really, link number 4 where WeirdDave suggests that he will pay for Dtc’s suicide - Jesus. That’s a horrible way to behave and if I were queen he would have been gone after that.
Also, FWIW, I’ve been here a long time. I have oodles of posts. I’m a rotten bitch. Some other posters actually hate me to the point of stalking me around just to make nasty comments. As far as I’m aware, I’ve never been officially warned. (I think I may have recieved a ‘knock it off’ for ‘tone’ once. I’m sure I deserved it.)

You are missing a key point. He was previously suspended for similar behavior, and told when he returned that he was on a short rope. That needs to go into the evidence file as well.

Many years ago I got away with calling someone an asshole outside the Pit, and was never warned. But I laid out the evidence and explained how it was the only possible conclusion to draw. I think I was spared because the mods must have considered it the same as simply posting a fact. Either that, or nobody reported it because everyone else in the thread agreed.
