My Wife and I live in the sticks in a pretty harsh environment. For 17 years we have been the only people on our dead end road. We now have neighbors about ¼ mile away. The other folks always moved after a winter or two. They are nice folks. We socialize a few times a year. Run into each other walking the dogs, take care of each others cats when on vacation. Borrow a tool? Go for it, the shed and house are unlocked. Just let me know that you have it. Um……But I gotta draw the line somewhere. Thanks for the offer to take our trash into town. Even though you have a ‘free’ dumpster to put it in, I’ll take care of my own trash. Maybe I’m being a bit too private or sensitive, but our neighbor took our trash out of our shed and hauled it off while we where not at home. Some of that was to be recycled. I know he is just trying to repay favors. We have helped them get acclimated to monster mountain living. But, I’ll take care of my own trash. You can go into my shed to borrow a tool, but loading up my trash in your truck and taking it into town with out asking me is a bit much. Considering the HOROR stories about neighbors I’ve read on the dope, this is of course nothing. It’s the opposite. Overly nice I guess, if a little weird. My Wife and I loved it with out neighbors, and we will have to adjust a bit. ---

If it comes up, just blame it on your wife: ‘Oh _I_ don’t care, but the wife. Jeez. She’s all about recycling, would hate to see that stuff go int he garbage, is trying to save the earth.’ That’s what spouses are _for_! ---

Holy crap, as a guy who has to drive his own trash to the dump every couple weeks I would LOVE IT if my neighbors took my trash for me. Especially after the cats have gotten into it. Dang. ---

Noting the forum, I’ll be nice. The assholes who live next door to me gave their 13 YO kid a DRUM SET for this past Christmas. A real live drum set. They also bought a metal building to put it in. A metal building (on the property line) that is 17 feet from my living area. He “practices” every day. AND on the weekends! I wish I had your problems. (Sorry for the all caps, I’m really upset about this. I’ve been meaning to start a thread about it but I’m too chicken for even that) ---

So the neighbor is crossing the line by taking out your garbage? He’s not splicing into your cable, massaging your wife’s feet or borrowing your hunting dog, but he is taking out the garbage? SOme nerve!😉 I don’t know how you cann extricate yourself from his favor, you’ll sound like you have something to hide. Just keep the recyclables separate and burn all evidence or toss it over the Divide! For 20 years my sis lived in your general area, off hwy 9 in the backyard of Quandry Mt. enipla/alpine 🙂 ---

Well, I do have to admit that is kind of… weird. But hey, at least they’re doing you a favor. If you have things that need to be recycled, get one of those labeled recycling bins and put it in your shed. Maybe they’ll even take it to the recycling center. At least you don’t share walls with a neighbor. I have to deal with loud, moaning sex at 3 A.M. from the other side of the wall in my room. Worse yet, its the guy that makes all the noise. ---

That sucks dude. We live out in the sticks too. Our closest neighbors are about like yours, probably 1/2 mile away, less as the crow flies. It sounds like you’re doing better with yours than we are with ours. Ours are from New Jersey, nothing against folks from the Garden State but DAMN, y’all should carefully consider whether Idaho is really the right place for you. We only see our neighbors a handful of times per year but they are really annoying. The fellow is a chauvinist asshole. This winter for instance, I was heading home after some errands, I’d plowed my road before I left, asshat was just getting to his at 11am - lazy prick. He had the gall to tell me to push my burm off the road, otherwise it would freeze. He all but baby talked me. Really you overbearing prick? It’ll freeze, I’m f@$%ing shocked! I _had_ pushed my burm over, he was referring to his own messy plow leavings. I loathe my neighbors, their dicketry aside, I just don’t want to see other people when I get home, that’s why I live in the bloody sticks. You’re in the right man, if this douche bag stealing your garbage makes you uncomfortable, well, you’re within your rights to feel that way and you wouldn’t be wrong to tell him to knock it off. ---

I told them in as nice a way possible that I’ll take care of my own garbage. It was just… odd. I opened up our shed and it was just gone. (in fairness, he did leave a message, but our phone is messed up and I couldn’t understand it). ---
