Man. So rarely do I come so late to a thread I was so completely qualified to answer EVERY question brought up, including the mystery behind “Cow tools” and who performed Joy To The World.. In fact, I got “Cow Tools” even without the explanation – Larson’s book just verified what I intuited the first time I saw that strip. How nutty was that?
And written by the late great Hoyt Axton (the dad in the movie “Gremlins”).
A little digging shows very few covers… Little Richard, James Last, The Coats (who?), and The Roots Radics (a reggae group) among others. Oh, The New Mickey Mouse Club (well The Old-New one from the '70s) also covered it. With some lyric changes I would guess. One of my first LPs.
I think 3DN was aping the Fogerty style imo.
