…I do not understand this guidance at all. I don’t think I quoted them out of context. The post was immediately above mine so the context was there. The rest of the response didn’t address either of my questions, so I snipped the bits out that didn’t answer my questions and quoted the bit that did.

How does this nearly rise to a warning?

**Bear** , not a mod myself of course, but I think it’s because you snipped away the large portion of **bump** ’s comment in which he explained why the marginalized people have no excuse for being unvaccinated (the vaccine’s totally free, and as accessible as can be), and quoted only his “I don’t give a shit about them” part, thus making it sound as if he were much more unreasonably callous towards them than he is. The portion you omitted was the part that made his last sentence (the one you quoted) reasonable. By removing it, he now sounds unreasonable.

…the two questions I asked were:

1. Do you have a cite for your assertion?

and

1. What do you want to happen next?

That marginalised people may (or may not) have an excuse didn’t answer my first question. The only response that was relevant to my question was the part that I quoted.

**Velocity** pretty much covers it. Not allowed and has never been allowed and in bad form anywhere.

Show that you snipped a quote in the future using ellipses or say as much. ETA: if you have changed the meaning or removed context.
You don’t get to use only the part of someone else’s post you want to.

_Just to explain it another way. What you did is extremely misleading and putting a different meaning to what another poster said._

…so hold on a second. Does this mean from now o we have to quote the entire post, even if it isn’t relevant?

So if I decide to do this:

> [@What\_Exit](#):
>
> Show that you snipped a quote in the future using ellipses or say as much.
> You don’t get to use only the part of someone else’s post you want to.

And not quote the first part of what you said, I’m breaking the rules?

Do I have to do this instead?

I did this with every post in that thread. I’ve done that with almost every post where I’ve quoted someone. Everyone does this. People have been pitted because they over-quote in posts. I’ve adopted this practice because people complain when you quote too much stuff.

Can you clarify?

> [@What\_Exit](#):
>

I don’t think I did though? What do you think Bump meant?

That is not my understanding of how it works. As in this post, you only quote the parts that are relevant to your response.

Now you’re being difficult. No one said you need to quote the entire post. If the context isn’t lost no problem. If you snip in a way that changes the meaning of what someone said, you better indicate as such with at least …

If you snip a post show the ellipses where the cuts were made. This has been a long standing rule.

_I snipped out the rest of the post_

We are not getting into what **Bump** ,meant. I already checked with 2 others mods. We all feel you changed his meaning.

What the hell? It was **immediately below** the quoted post, the context was _right there_, and didn’t _change_ the meaning of anything in any case. Highlighting the relevance of that sentence in relation to BB’s question doesn’t change the meaning of that sentence.

Bad modding (and 3 of you agreeing on it doesn’t change that)

…I’m not trying to be difficult here. But if you feel that I changed the meaning then the meaning of his post is **relevant**. I don’t think I changed the meaning at all. You seem to be ignoring additional context: which was the original questions that I asked Bump.

Here is the actual rule:

> [@Terms of Service and FAQ](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/terms-of-service-and-faq/823562/2):
>
> **Quote Box** – Do not modify another poster’s words inside the quote box. For SDMB posters, the quote must be accurate, whether displayed using [QUOTE] tags or ordinary quotation marks. Normal editorial rules apply: that is, you may indicate omitted portions of a quote by the use of ellipses “…” or devices such as [snip]. You may add text to clarify a word using square brackets (e.g., “her [the sister’s] friend”), but you may not add editorial comments or edit a quote so as to change the substantive meaning; nor may you substitute text such as “some blather” or “more nonsense” inside the [QUOTE] tags or quotation marks. We encourage accurate quoting of off-board individuals in a serious discussion; links are recommended. If it becomes apparent you’re derailing a discussion with fake or misleading quotes of off-board individuals, we reserve the right to take action. Unattributed parody quotes are permitted in all forums provided they don’t violate other SDMB rules. In the BBQ Pit forum only, parody quotes may be attributed to a parody username, provided that (a) the parody username is obviously satirical - we’ll be the judge of obviousness; and (b) no other rules are violated. Quotes attributed to parody usernames are not permitted in other forums.

Oh, this is bullshit. You’re making up some shit _post hoc_ that has never been applied in this way, to justify a bullshit ruling.

That’s never been what “snipping” is on this board, and you know it.

And might I suggest you disable the quote-highlight function? Since that’s all it does.

How? It was the first reply, and he quoted the sentence verbatim.

What “change of context” are you talking about?

No, it has never been used like that. He didn’t edit anything, or quote only part of a sentence.
