Whether the hand or the ring gets saved is irrelevant to the story. The story, as crafted for the wires, is about how a marine with a hurt hand was thinking about his marriage. Pure sentiment and borderline propaganda. What you don’t see is a story about a reservist who lost his face, because he was riding in an unarmored vehicle, in a city where the neocons said the residents would throw flowers in the path of their American liberators. Six months after he was due to return to civilian life. And, that his wife left him because his disfigurement was too much to deal with - or better yet, that his boyfriend wasn’t allowed to visit him in the military hospital because the reservist’s long-estranged family thinks homosexuality is evil (Yes I am laying it on pretty thick, but you get the idea). (BTW **Liberal** , do not lecture me on the Democratic struggle … What did YOU do to get Bush out of office? Besides park yourself on some internet message board and yammer snarkily about what a “tyrant” he is? Maybe if you stopped impersonating Ignatius Reilly and got off your ass for once, you wouldn’t feel so angry and helpless about all the problems our country has right now.)
