Well, we looked around to see if there was a reason for Florida to exist. Kept looking until we crossed into Alabama (_something frying pan something something fire_), hoping there might be something. I mean, it was March, one wants to not be in Wisconsin in March, but Florida was a damn depressing alternative. ---

I drove 120 miles to attend a friend’s funeral, feeling the social obligation even though I hate funerals. At the reception afterwards, I felt completely out of place since I didn’t know most people there and didn’t much care for the ones I did know (though I had been very close with the deceased) so a very short time later I got back in the car and drove another 120 miles back home. ---

I drove 160 miles to light a pilot light, and then drove back home. ---

I drove from Philadelphia, PA to State College, PA to pick up a car title so my mother could trade her (broken-down) car in for a new one. She had recently moved so we looked for about 4 hours before finding the title. Then drove back with the title to complete the sale. On the way, we passed through Harrisburg, PA where we could have gone to the PennDOT and gotten a new title, probably faster (debatable, but if we got it before they closed it would have been many hours faster) ---

Around (goddammit) 25 years ago I’d been living in Colorado for a few years, during the day when Jack-in-the-Box fast food was gone from the state. A local friend was missing their unholy deep-fried tacos and happened to look up where the closest JitB was - it happened to be in Las Cruces NM. I went “That’s funny, I grew up there, my folks still live there.” We (myself, wife and said friend) ended up doing a road trip to visit my folks and get said friend JitB about 2 weeks later. And he still loved them - luckily he was still in his 20s, I don’t think any of us could survive without chronic heartburn from any such thing these days. The drive was not the best for me - we took his car, which was a Subaru sports coup - and since I was the only who wasn’t at risk for motion sickness, I got in the half-sized back seat, though I did manage to stretch out a bit since I had it to myself. Anyway, he drove the whole way and back, and we spent 2 days in Cruces. So he drove 630 miles _each_ way for those tacos. ---
