I didn’t listen to it then either. Guitar, bass, drums, vocals. That’s what a band is supposed to be.

I happened to catch the Best Rock Album award on the Grammy’s a few weeks back. The nominees were AC/DC, Green Day, U2, Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood, and Dave Matthews Band. I was like shit, that could have been the list of nominees from 15 years ago and most of those bands/performers are even older than that! Of course it may just say more about the Grammy’s than the current state of rock, that 15+ year old bands are the front runners.

> I am hardly an afficionado of current music, but this is a rant without substance. I am 37, so I went through the hair metal, Debbie Gibson, I had my share of Styx, Journey and Foreigner. Calling today’s music overproduced and meaningless next to that is nonsense. If anything there is more room for a wider range of styles to be heard now than there ever was before.

Yeahm tatrap was out there, and it dominated the charts, but I didn’t listen to it. There were still plenti of real bands out there. I don’t hear anything that excites me anynore. I am perfectly wiling to accept thatpart of this is just because I’m getting old, but I really do think the music has declined. There aren’t any bands like Rush or Led Zeppelin and more.

I wouldn’t call any of that stuff “quality,” but that’s just me.

We had a particularly demanding patient/patient family member at work. The day she was being discharged as we watched them walk out the door I said “Ok, cue Kool and the Gang”

Blank looks.

“Celebration?”

Blank and quizical looks. I had sing the line from the song.

Oh, that old thing that they trot out when people win I didn’t know it was really a song, like they played on the radio. I thought it was like Happy Birthday or He’s a jolly good fellow."

:smack:
Then again, these are 22 and 23 year olds.

Heh. I went out to lunch with my husband a couple weeks ago and the cashier GAVE him the senior discount without asking.

He’s 48.

I laughed all through our meal and texted the kids to let them enjoy it also.

Sadly, there was no discount for seniors at lunchtime.

> [I started this thread to help oldish farts out,](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=551304) mostly because I’m sick to death of hearing Boomers talking about how there hasn’t been any good music made since 1979. Stephen Fry said something on Craig Ferguson’s show last week that summed this up perfectly - it isn’t that everything from the 70’s and 80’s was better, it’s that YOU were better. People in their 50s and 60s now are recalling how golden their young adulthood was, and conflating that with the things they enjoyed then.

Well, Stephen Fry is full of it then. I like the 1812 Overture- how does his theory hold up then?

It may also be that we consider that the music then- whenever “then” was- is actually better and more attuned to our taste.

When it comes to music age is meaningless. Les Paul died young at 94.

> I’m the same way, but I think it’s really the music that’s to blame. The music is all garbage now. It’s all too electronic and too over produced. No one can play an instrument. They all use autotuners. All rap sucks without exception. The last band I ever really got into was Nirvana, and that was close to 20 years ago. There hasn’t been a good band since. All there is is lip-synching dancers, douchey Christian boy bands, woman beating rappers, self-indulgent R&B bilge, Plastic American Idol robots, and fucking pop country. Lemmy Kilmeister walks all over and all current acts. Why should I buy anything new? If they want to top sucking then maybe I’ll listen.

You’re wrong.

I saw a listing, once, on eBay, for an empty - empty! - bottle of Oh! de London perfume for something like $100. There were over 30 bids for it. That was the perfume I wore in my mini-skirt days, when I looked like Jean Shrimpton. Now I look like Jean Shrimpton’s Gran…☹ I read on a perfume site that the original formula couldn’t be duplicated today (and be affordable) since there’s a shortage of the sandalwood necessary to make it.

I’m a senior citizen in some places, like Denney’s, but not others. I’ve been offered the senior discount in a thrift store when I made an impulse trip - no makeup, dirty hair, cleaning-out-the-garage clothes…I was shocked, but hell yeah, I took it!

(I can kind of hear the one or two of you out there skimming this, thinking, ‘who the hell is Jean Shrimpton?’)

(sigh) Jean Shrimpton, leggy Super Model of the 60’s in Swingin’ England. She was the face of Yardley cosmetics, which sold Oh! de London perfume (which is why she came to mind). Boy, I guess I AM old - better stop worrying about makeup and look into buying some Oil of Ol’ Age!

It’s because you have good taste. Most of today’s music is garbage- rap “music,” beboppy hip hoppy “music,” caterwauling bimbos, etc.

I had to have my “curmudgeon” moment of the day 🙂
