Well after about six years of soul searching, studying, travelling, and general mixed feelings about my current career of teaching, I finally applied to the college of engineering. I am wondering if I am making the best decision of my life, or if I am batshit insane. Regardless, it is nice to feel some control of my destiny again, even if it is only a perceived sense of control. Yay me. Just thought I’d share, as many people on this board have helped me through my angsty years of confusion. ---

Yep, batshit insane is the only way to do it. No other way to get through PDEs, apparently. Like you, I quit a career to go into engineering (mechanical). I had a decent but not huge salary, good benefits, great coworkers…and I was miserable. Getting through an engineering degree has been the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do - largely because it involved lots of convincing myself that I really could do it - but it’s been so worth it. I’ve been struggling to land a job (due to lots of bad luck, it seems) but it’s still been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made (right up there with hitting on that cute guy way back when, who is now my husband!) My nephew has just finished high school and has been accepted into engineering. He’s thinking of specialising in mining engineering.
