Aren’t you guys trying to shoot the messenger here? Advertisers reflect the society they operate in, they wouldn’t sell much otherwise. In other words, the ad has just enough of truth in it to be effective. Sparklers _can_ be more effective than a line of schmaltz in a campaign of seduction. ---

I dislike the artificiality of the whole thing–it all seems forced, this annual love -fest that creates a heart-shaped world for well, weeks now. Back when I thought that romance and I would have more than a passing acquaintance, I didn’t mind Valentine’s Day. Now, as my marriage sort of crumbles ( **LIssa** --it sounds strange to say, but you can indeed stay married to someone who doesn’t really know you for 20 years, or at least 18)–I find I dread this day for my own personal reasons. If Valentine’s Day is important to you, I hope it goes well. The complete commercialization of it is disgusting–and I find it’s when the stereotypes of both genders really come out. Ugh. ---

I told DogDad the first time we saw that stupid DeBeers ad mentioned above where the guy’s shouting “I LOVE THIS WOMAN!” that I’d rather he stood in a crowded plaza shrieking “I LOVE THIS WOMAN!” than paying thousands of bucks for jewelry. After all, _anyone_ can buy diamonds. Heck, my _dog_ could probably get a sufficient credit-line to buy diamonds. But it takes someone either really really nuts or really really secure to make a total fool of themselves in public for love of another person. ---

JC Penny no longer needs to raise their profile. They need to have a positive experience associated with their brand name. DeBeers isn’t actually raising their own profile, but that of their product. They don’t care if you want a Debeers diamond or not, because the alternative is to dig one yourself in Herkimer. They just want you to feel like you’re a little less of a man if you can’t get your woman a big sparklie. ---

It’s not particularly flattering. And this commercial certainly does not improve that image. JCP doesn’t sell anything I can’t find at other stores. So when I choose between those stores, and I run through the options in my head (consciously or subconsciously), I will generally choose to go to the ones that have a more positive image in my mind. I simply can’t believe that all publicity is good publicity. ---
