# I got a UTE!

Utes are normally the sole domain of tradies and shit, but this Nanna has wanted one for many years. And the stars got aligned or something (actually, I got some unexpected $) so today I GOT A UTE!
So instead of packing the trailer with the barbie, camp oven, tents, billy and the esky, I can bung it all in the back of the UTE!
Translation before you ask: Utility vehicles are those with a flat or enclosed tray at the rear with a drop-down gate, normally used for transporting goods from point A to point B. They are the preferred vehicles for tradesmen like builders, plumbers and landscape gardeners. Middle aged women don’t drive ‘Utes’…they drive respectable suburban cars.
But I have wanted a UTE for a long time, and found one online at a very decent price that I could afford! It’s also in immaculate condition (prolly driven by another Nanna for the last 15 yrs :P)
So when I next go camping under the shade of a Coolibah tree, instead of having to load up a 6 x 4 trailer with all our gear, I can place it all into the tray of the UTE. BBQ, billy (a receptacle for boiling water and making tea) camp oven ( a big pot made from cast iron that will sit on your fire) and an esky is a portable insulated box that keeps food fresh and cold…with ice. 😃
But yeah, I got a UTE! WOOOOOT! 🙂

Whoops, forgot the translation again!
In Aus we have three types of fuel for cars: Petrol, Diesel and LPG GAS. Gas is roughly half the price of petrol and diesel, and is less polluting by far.

Oh, translation again. A PUB is an establishment that serves beer, wine and spirits, and most often serves meals like Parma, which is a chicken schnitzel covered in tomato sauce, cheese and some sort of processed ham.
Wednesday nights at the PUB are renowned for PARMA AND POT nights, which means you get served the chicken schnitzel meal, with a ‘pot’ of beer. A pot is 270ml if my memory serves me correctly. And it’s a tenner for both!

I’m thinking about getting a tinny. If I get a tinny then I’ll have an excuse to buy a ute to tow it. But then I’ll need to get a bitser to go in the back of the ute and I don’t really want a bitser. So I guess it can’t have a tinny. Or a ute.

Then before rereading or checking the OP, immediately went towards the Australian angle. I don’t need translation for that (closest American equivalent is Subaru Baja/BRAT or Chevrolet El Camino, although I rarely saw those in the wild). Now I do need a translation for tradie: contractors, or guys who are the reason why we call it a “toothbrush” and not “teethbrush”?.. Coolibah, barbie, billy? Now we’re in a Foster’s ad, aren’t we?

Cripes Prin mate, you’ll be up for a bloody trailer for the tinny as well - why not just stick it in the tray?

Congratulations! It sounds like freedom and independence! I, too, am happy because I have an SUVS that will take me off-road and will also get good fuel economy. Maybe not as good as yours with gas, but my diesel does pretty well.

When I think of utes, it brings back childhood memories. I grew up in a tiny fishing village, surrounded by farmland. Most of my friends’ families had utes, usually [this model](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holden_Kingswood#/media/File:HQ_Holden_Belmont.jpg), but with the crap beaten out of them from constant rough use. They’d have their labrador retrievers, fishing nets, stray sheep, or kids all piled up in the back, depending on where they were going that day.
