Ok, we do have pubs in the US, and chicken parm. ![]()
So a Ute is not the same as an SUV?
I wanted a Jeep Wranger (TJ or YJ) for eons, but the new Jeep Wranglers are too ginormous. I’m not following Patton into Belgium, FFS!

Ohhh, a Ute!
We had those in the US for a long while (1959 to 1980-something). It was called an El Camino. They’re handy; a friend had one for ages, it was great for his business (painting), and also great to take camping (sure we can take that!). We used to put a johnboat in the back, no trailer needed. ![]()
thelurkinghorror: here you go; thismay help.
eta: or this: http://www.koalanet.com.au/australian-slang.html
I could get several utes today.
Of course, they’ll probably look like this.
Like this list, I too was thinking pickup truck. But if like a Chevy El Camino in the States, there’s also the Ford Ranchero - another example of the type of station-wagon-turned-into-pickup-truck/car.
Judge Chamberlain Haller: …Ah, you got a what? Uh… uh, what was that word?
kambuckta: Uh… what word?
Judge Chamberlain Haller: A what?
kambucktai: What?
Judge Chamberlain Haller: Uh… did you say ‘Ute’?
kambuckta: Yeah, I got a ute.
Judge Chamberlain Haller: What is a ute?
kambuckta: [beat] Oh, excuse me, your honor…
kambuckta: A U-TIL-I-TY VEH-ICLE.
I was always a fan of the Dodge Rampage.
Coincidentally, I just saw one of those on Sunday. prior to that I hadn’t seen one in like forever.
Funny – all the ones I know look more like this. ![]()
I used to have a UTE (89 4Runner). One of the best things about it was having a tailgate. Most SUVs today have liftbacks instead–great for some folks, but there’s nothing like sitting on a tailgate.
Pchsa… my brother has something like 12 UTEs!
(Unión Temporal de Empresas, a kind of temporary corporation created exclusively to be able to bid on jobs that none of the component companies would be able to bid on separatedly)
Mind you: I don’t think his UTEs are particularly useful for camping…
A 7 day of course of Bactrim will cure it.

It looks like the El Camino is making a return.
I’m glad to know I wasn’t the only one hearing Fred Gwynne asking, “A what?”
I was going to post the clip, until I saw that (then-newest) post.
My ute has been fading for many years.
Can you fit a jumbuck into the tray?
If you do, drive away fast.
So had the SO’s. She had it repainted, and it looks brand new.
Bleah! What’d they do? Chop up a 2016 Blazer? El Camino should be Chevelle-based, dammit!
