I guess I’m showing my age but if you say ute to me it means a two door vehicle with an enclosed flat bed tray, the whole thing built on a standard four door passenger car chassis. So if it isn’t basically a Holden Commodore or a Ford Falcon I have never thought of them as utes. My brother drives a Hilux. To me it has always been a truck. God knows what the Mazda crew cab is.
The ute is based on a standard 2WD passenger vehicle. The farmer who invented it was inspired by his wife who wanted a vehicle to take her to church on Sundays and the pigs to the market on Monday.
