# I got accused of racism by a guy who was trying to hit on me

I had something like this happen to me when I much younger. I was asleep and the doorbell rang. I was kind of fuzzy, but I answered it. A young black teenager was standing at the door, trying to get me to buy magazines or something. I said no thanks and went to shut the door. He stopped me and kept talking. I was young, too and wasn’t as firm as I would be now, so I listened to his spiel. He asked again. Again I said no thanks. He lost his smile and said to me, “You don’t want to see me get out of the ghetto?”

I said, “no.” and shut the door in his face. I was livid that he would play that crap when I’d already told him no. It is about the only time in my life I was able to be that quick on the draw and actually have a snarky reply ready (usually I think of all the good retorts days after the event).  
I was also asked out by the dishwasher at work when I was in college (I worked at the Walnut Room in Marshall Field’s)–Booker T. Forgot His Last Name. He was funny and bright and good looking, but I had a boyfriend. After he asked me out and I turned him down, he said he didn’t think I was “like that”. He didn’t explain and clueless me didn’t get it for months.
