I WILL confess that I didn’t research this as much as I should. I didn’t know until later that I could only legally withhold 1/2 of the rent, so I shot myself in the foot in this particular instance. I know better for next time, though.

Where am I staying? Currently, I am borrowing a friend’s couch until I decide my next move. The prolem with this is that her daughter is deathly allergic to cats, so I’ve had to board mine at the vet’s. I am NOT happy about this.

Yes, but WHEN did you start withholding rent? If they filed on 1/23, had you paid January’s rent? According to the chronology you provided, you should have been paid up to date at the time they filed, again assuming that rent is due on the first of the month.
